Mike Gonzalez, founder and former designer of Mike and Chris, has branched out on his own, fusing street style and sophistication through his recently-launched eponymous label. Gonzalez is a true mix master—his African-inspired spring 2011 collection has components of quite a few current runway trends (military, sheer accents, and geometric cutouts, to name a couple) but he combines them in a way that feels way fresh. The designer's diverse roots in East LA street culture as well as high fashion photography shine through in his feminine fabrics and silhouettes, sprinkled with harder elements like thick chain necklaces and graphic prints. Everything is tied together by a few key motifs like a chevron shape that crops up on turquoise tailored track shorts (they look better than they sound, we promise) and crocheted sweaters, plus killer pieces like a three-way wrap tribal patterned maxi dress and a headwrap/turban hybrid that will make you look positively regal. This is one mixed bag we could totally get into!
