I am loving the dark lipstick trend, but it smudges after a few martinis. How can I make my dark lips work for me for longer than 10 minutes? — A

Hi A! Dark lips are sexy, dramatic, gorgeous…and really high-maintenance! They tend to need a lot more loving than other, less intense lipstick colors. One trick that I swear by is to take a lip liner in a similar color as my desired lipstick and fill in my entire lip with it. Let that set, and then apply your lipstick as usual. The lip liner helps intensify the color and gives the lipstick something to “grab” onto, so it won’t smudge off quite as easily.

Another great trick I picked up backstage is to grab a lip pigment or creamy lip stain and, using your finger, gently press it into the lip. This creates that stained, morning-after look that’s just as sexy, but needs a lot less attention. I love Laura Mercier’s Lip Stain in Sugar Violet and Tom Ford’s Lip Color in Black Orchid — they’re both super-pigmented, so they last forever, and hydrating, so you don’t get that cracked, flaky look.
