Show Pony: 5 Fresh New DIY 'Dos

Why should topknots and braids have all of the fun, we ask? The humble pony is back and better than ever — and our favorite part about the 'tail is that there are endless ways to wear it: textured, straight, high, low, perky, sleek. Ponytails are like the Matt Damon of the hair world: always likable, infinitely versatile. Yep, we went there.
To show you just how stylish and cutting-edge your favorite workout 'do can be, we teamed up with hair magician Isabel Guillen of the John Barrett Salon to create five totally fresh takes on the 'tail, all of which can be done easily at home. The only tools you'll need? Elastics, bobby pins, a parting comb, and a teasing brush. Get ready, ladies, because your end-of-summer hair is about to get an upgrade.

The Not-So-Ladylike Twist

This twisted, textured style is as chic as a chignon, but much more bad-ass.

To start, begin with textured hair. (Slightly dirty hair, or locks that have been treated with texturizer and/or dry shampoo, are both fine). For extra lift and grip at the crown, tease lightly all over with a teasing brush.

Grab the hair at your crown, twist a few times to the right, and pin the twist into place, pushing the hair up a bit to maintain the volume at the crown.

Once the twist is pinned, pull more hair back, twist to the right, and pin, so that there appears to be one big twist continuing down the back of your head. Once you reach the nape of your neck, tie the hair off into a low pony with an elastic.

The finished style: a little bit prim, a whole lot haphazard (and super-cool). Feel free to muss up with your fingers for a little bit more devil-may-care attitude.

Make a deep side part on the right side of your head, Next, create a part right along the back of your head, starting above your right ear, and clip the hair above the part out of the way.

Braid time! Starting on the right side, begin to French-braid the hair underneath the part. Move along, braiding across your head horizontally.

Continue your sneaky French braid until you reach the left side of your head. Braid the section all the way to the end, and secure the braid with an elastic.

We love how this look has extra style — but due to its swoopy, imperfect nature, it'll never look like you're trying too hard.

The Low Rider

Inspired by the super-low ponytails on recent runways (but with a decorative fishtail accent), this tail is on the cutting edge.

Begin with straight hair (a blowout or quick flat-iron-treatment should do ya) and a middle part. Pull hair back into a low ponytail at the base of the neck. Pull your hair right over your ears — this is what gives the look that modern feel. Fasten with an elastic.

Take a skinny piece of hair from the pony and wrap it around the elastic multiple times. Secure the end with a bobby pin set underneath the hair.

Next, take the free hair in the pony, divide into two sections, and start fishtail braiding. Once you get around two inches of braid in there, secure with an elastic. (Don't know how to fishtail? Don't worry — this tutorial will help!)

Start with straight hair. Section off a rectangular section of hair by drawing a straight line back from the arch of each eyebrow, all the way back to the crown of the head. Secure this section with a clip.

Take the loose hair and fasten it into a tight ponytail right at the center of your head.

Divide the hair at the top of the head into three sections: one at the front of your head, and two on either side. Take the front section and tease the heck out of it with your teasing brush.

Using your fingers, roll the hair onto itself into a large, cylindrical pincurl. Secure with bobby pins.

Repeat the teasing and rolling process on the left side section, and pin. As you pin the hair, pull the roll apart a bit so that it becomes seamless with the front roll.

Secure your roll extra-tightly with pins — a criss-crossing technique would work great here. Repeat your teasing and rolling on the right side, until you have the illusion of one big, bad roll going around your head.

Once all of the hair at the top of the head is rolled and pinned (tuck in any errant ends for a smooth look), wrap a piece of hair around the ponytail, and secure with a pin.

Start with textured, wavy hair that has some grip (add in some texturizer if needed). Pull hair back loosely into a high ponytail, keeping some volume at the crown.

Tease underneath the tail for extra oomph.

Push the tail forward until the top of the pony hits your head. Pin that hair to your head with a few bobby pins to give the tail extra lift.

Take the loose hair and pin the center of the tail to the back of your head with lots of crisscrossed bobby pins. We used black for the contrast, but this look would also look cool with colored or neon bobby pins.

And...that's it, seriously. Easy, pretty and different — everything a pony should be!
