The Year In Celebrity Breakups

Photo: Samir Hussein/WireImage.
Another year, another round of soul-crushing breakups. Amid all the tumult of 2017, celebrity splits felt almost tame. And, of course, the year couldn't compete with 2016, which contained the Brangelina Breakup Disaster. Still, life marches forward, and what is life if not a series of successive endings, breakups, and goodbyes? I don't mean to sound morbid, but we did lose a lot of great couples this year. In 2017, we said goodbye to Anna Faris and Chris Pratt, and faced the loss of Fergie and Josh Duhamel. It's like, couldn't they have pretended to stay together so that we could at least take comfort in some solid celebrity couples?
Alas, celebrities are humans (really!) and breakups are part of their lives just as much as they are of ours. And, you know, now, Fergie has more time for herself. Anna Faris can focus on her podcast, and The Weeknd can go back to his fly-by-night love life. Breakups are renewals — a celebrity renaissance, if you will. If we're talking about it that way, there were a lot of celebrity renewals this year.
Ahead, these celebrities got a new lot in life this year. We will mourn the relationships briefly, and then, we celebrate their renaissance.

Ben Higgins & Lauren Bushnell

Ben Higgins, one of the youngest Bachelors in recent years, actually seemed like he might be able to make The Bachelor work. But he and his contestant-fiancée split in May, well over a year after they got engaged on the show.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce our decision to go our separate ways. We feel fortunate for the time we had together, and will remain friends with much love and respect for one another. We wish nothing but the best for each other, and ask for your support and understanding at this time," the couple said in a joint statement. Now, Bushnell has a new beau and Higgins has a weekly podcast.

Anna Faris & Chris Pratt

Faris and Pratt were one of Hollywood's most beloved couples. And, Faris made their private life fairly public with her podcast Unqualified. This made their breakup all the more abrupt. Pratt was slated to write the foreword to Faris' book, which hadn't come out yet when they separated.

"We are sad to announce we are legally separating," Faris announced via Instagram in August. "We tried for hard for a long time and we're really disappointed. Our son has two parents who love him very much and for his sake we want to keep this situation as private as possible moving forward. We still love each other and will always cherish our time together."

Pratt still wrote the foreword to Faris' book, but critics deemed it "awkward." He addresses the breakup in the essay, and at one point claims he'd never smelled Anna Faris' farts. Faris is now reportedly dating cinematographer Michael Barrett.

Vanessa Grimaldi & Nick Viall

When they got engaged on The Bachelor, Viall and Grimaldi faced an uphill battle. Fans were convinced Viall had the wrong woman. Even during the proposal, Grimaldi seemed unhappy. On After the Final Rose, the two kept insisting that fostering a relationship post-show was "difficult." So, it wasn't surprising when the two ended their engagement this August.

"It's with a great amount of heartbreak for the both us as we have decided to end our engagement," the couple said in a statement. "We gave this relationship our all and we are saddened that we did not get the fairytale ending we hoped for. We will continue to be there for each other no matter what. This hasn't been an easy decision, however, as we part ways, we do so with lots of love and admiration for each other."

Selena Gomez & The Weeknd

SelGo and The Weeknd — Seleknd, if you will — were one of the year's most interesting couples. Both are mysterious figures, and both were veterans of high-profile Hollywood relationships. (Gomez ended her relationship with Justin Bieber in 2012. The Weeknd broke up with supermodel Bella Hadid in November 2016.)

They made their first public red carpet appearance in May at the Met Gala. There, they canoodled on the red carpet like newlyweds. But they broke up not six months after in October. Gomez told Billboard that the two remain close friends. And, Gomez was recently spotted kissing her ex Justin Bieber.

Jennifer Lawrence & Darren Aronofsky

Lawrence and Aronofsky spent most of their relationship not being in a relationship. They didn't confirm their rumored relationship until Lawrence was doing the press tour for mother! She told Vogue that she and Aronofsky had chemistry during production, but didn't start dating until after filming wrapped.

"We had energy," she said. "I had energy for him. I don't know how he felt about me."

The two broke up almost two months later in late November. Much of the internet made the same joke: Lawrence had broken up with Aronofsky because she finally got to see mother! (The movie depicts a poet and his muse, whom he neglects.) They dated for just about a year.

Fergie & Josh Duhamel

Fergie announced her breakup with Josh Duhamel just before releasing her 2017 album Double Dutchess in September. She said in an interview that she and Duhamel started doing press as a couple, but ultimately the pretense felt weird.

"Honestly, it was just getting a little weird for us with all the romantic questions," she told People. "We're great friends, we love each other so much, and it just got to the point where it was getting a little weird...there's no perfect time, so we just decided to do it."

The two met in 2004 and wed in 2009. They have one child, a four-year-old son named Axl.

Amber Heard & Elon Musk

Heard and Musk never appeared on a red carpet together, which might have added to the public's fascination with the couple. After they announced their split, they released a statement that included a criticism of the media's coverage of their relationship.

"Having read recent articles about our relationship, we would like to speak for ourselves. The distance has been really tough on our relationship, because we haven't been able to see each other much. All relationships have their ups and downs, of course," the couple said in a joint statement provided to People. "People occasionally send out speculation, which has no basis in fact, without our knowledge, believing that that they have our best interests in mind. Sometimes, other agendas are at work. It can get a little weird...However, we would like to state directly that we have the utmost respect for one another, and it would be troubling if anyone had the impression that we thought otherwise."

Following their split, Patridge was granted a temporary restraining order against Bohan. In October, People reported that Patridge would receive full custody of the couple's daughter Kirra Max.

Rob Kardashian & Blac Chyna

The saga of Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna is still ongoing — Chyna is still in the middle of a lawsuit against Kardashian. The lawsuit, which initially named Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner, Khloé Kardashian, and Kourtney Kardashian as well, claims that Rob Kardashian defamed Chyna in order to get her reality show Rob & Chyna cancelled. This came on the heels of a vicious, sexist social media rant from Kardashian, which contained explicit photos of Chyna.

Before that, though, they were a couple — although the union seemed tenuous. In May, Kardashian shared a photo of himself with Chyna on Instagram, leading fans to believe the couple was on again. Later, he called Chyna "the woman [he] loved" in yet another Instagram tribute.

At this point, it seems clear they are no longer together. The couple share one child, a daughter named Dream.

Jenny Slate & Chris Evans

Slate and Evans' breakup was notable because Slate, a comedian, was very frank about it in interviews. She explained in a lengthy interview for Vulture that Evans' level of fame wrought havoc on their relationship.

"For him to go to a restaurant is totally different than for me to go," she said. "I sit in my window and I say ‘Hi’ to people on the street. I have more freedom because I’m not Captain America. I’m mostly a cartoon."

In the same interview, Slate seemed to express a genuine love for Evans. ""Chris is truly one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, to the point where sometimes I would look at him and it would kind of break my heart," she said. "He’s really vulnerable, and he’s really straightforward. He’s like primary colors. He has beautiful, big, strong emotions, and he’s really sure of them. It’s just wonderful to be around. His heart is probably golden-colored, if you could paint it."

Slate and Evans appear to have gotten back together in late November of this year.

The Orange Is The New Black star ended her engagement with her longtime fiancée Chelsea Fairless in January of this year — she was one of the first to break up in 2017.

"Please exclude us from the tragic and basic celebrity breakup narrative. We were happy together for four years and will remain in each other's lives. In fact, we look forward to finding new ways to torture each other. We would like to thank our incredible friends and families for their love and support," DeLaria wrote on Instagram announcing the split.

"I haven’t really, you know, thought about what to say, but yeah, we did break up. It’s sad," she said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

Their breakup got messy when Murray's personal assistant told In Touch Weekly that Murray called the police on Stanton when she would not return a car that Murray had gifted her back in October. Stanton appeared on Bachelor in Paradise season 4, and briefly dated Robby Hayes.

One thing will never change and that is that we will always love and support each other, and be the best parents we can be to our children. Love you guys.”

In response, just about everyone made the same joke: Did Theresa see it coming?
