This New Drugstore Collection Was Designed To Flatter All Skin Tones

The end of summer tends to bring up an array of mixed feelings. It marks the slow, chilly descent into fall, the start of a new school year, and the end of summer Fridays. On the bright side, it also signals an onslaught of new drugstore launches — and if this year has been any indication, this month's loot will be legendary.
Ready to start with a bang? Maybelline just dropped a four-piece collection in collaboration with beauty blogger Shayla Mitchell, which the pair shared early exclusively with Refinery29. Mitchell had one all-important goal while creating the collection: That each piece would flatter every single one of her 2 million followers. "When I created this collection I wanted to make sure that it was completely inclusive and that anyone could wear it, no matter their skin tone," Shayla told R29. "Being a woman of color and hearing from my followers every day, I never want anyone to be left out."

This isn't the first time Mitchell has teamed up with the drugstore makeup powerhouse. You might remember her campaign for the brand's The Colossal Big Shot Mascara that launched earlier this year. After falling in love with the mascara, she decided to create three new shades as part of her collection with the brand.

We've been fans of Maybelline's The City Mini Palettes since the line dropped earlier this summer — and now we have another reason to fan out. Shayla created her very own version featuring six hand-picked shades. "I went to the Maybelline labs in New York and they said 'Create your color,'" she says. "We literally mixed the shades to get the perfect colors and I had everybody swatch the colors on their hands because I needed it to look good on everyone...Every skin tone needed to be in that room and I wanted everyone's feedback."

Shayla picked a host of universally-flattering shades like bronze and brown. "I wanted those neutral tones you can wear every day," she says. "I hate seeing a palette and thinking 'Those aren't colors I'd wear'." Then, to add a pop of color, she threw in a metallic version of her favorite color: purple.

Continuing with the purple theme, Mitchell created a violet version of her beloved The Colossal Big Shot Mascara. "Purple is my favorite color, it's the color of royalty and I wanted everyone to feel powerful," she says.

"Boomin' In Blue is one of my favorite colors to wear on my eyes as mascara because blue really brings out my brown eyes," Shayla tells R29.

"I also always have to have the darkest black mascara," she adds. "So I needed a true dark, carbon-black mascara in the mix."
