We Discovered Gwyneth's Oscar-Dress Equation

At this point, Gwyneth Paltrow is a pro at making an impact on the red carpet. At tonight's Academy Awards, where she'll be presenting, she showed off a Ralph & Russo Couture gown. The petal-pink, silk-crepe dress featured an asymmetrical neckline, with just one sleeve and, of course, a giant organza rosette on her left shoulder.

It was unmistakeably lovely, but it also looked a little...familiar. So, we did a little digging and discovered that this dress is essentially the lovechild of two looks Paltrow's worn to the Oscars in the past.

We start with Exhibit A: The Ralph Lauren dress in which Paltrow famously accepted her Oscar for Shakespeare in Love at the 71st Annual Academy Awards — and which was widely credited with bringing pink back in fashion (and may have caused a million poufy princess gowns to be worn to prom in 1999):

And, we add in a touch of Exhibit B: The white Tom Ford cape-dress that Gwyneth wore to the Academy Awards in 2012 — from which this year's gown gets its sleek silhouette and asymmetrical neckline:

Could it be that Gwyneth is merely recombining past favorites into a sort of greatest-hits sartorial stew? In any case, she clearly knows what works for her. And, if that just so happens to also include a smidge of what works for Carrie Bradshaw, who's counting?
