Rihanna's Most Iconic Looks, From 2005 'Til Now

Rihanna turns 27 today, which means she's now been delighting us with her music, her way with the English language, and her truly inimitable fashion choices for 10 years.

Since 2005, she's evolved from a cute-but-unremarkable R&B singer into an actual fashion icon, whose risk-taking looks make awards shows worth watching (and who almost single-handedly made sweatpants with heels look like a good idea).

In tribute to the only woman who can pull off a gigantic pink loofah and a near-naked dress with equal aplomb, we present to you 12 pics that exemplify the evolution of Rihanna's style. We love you, Rih!

2005: "Pon de Replay"-era Rihanna wore weird jerseys with faux neckties, and when she busted a sag, it showed off Victoria's Secret underwear. A cute look, but nothing like the risk-taker she'd become.

2006: At that year's Billboard Music Awards, we started to see shades of today's RihRih. Penchant for dramatic hair, revealing clothes, and unique cleavage situations? Check.

2007: Shown here smack in the middle of her Good Girl Gone Bad transformation, this was the first time Rih made us say whoa. The short-cropped hair; the hot-pink gown; the pointy, black manicure: Between "Umbrella" and this lewk, her evolution from generic R&B starlet to superstar has begun in earnest.

2008: Rihanna spent most of 2008 touring the world and scooping up awards in a series of surprisingly unmemorable, brightly colored gowns. Notable for being the last time we'd see her in color for a while before her goth-y makeover of 2009...

2009: It's hard to overstate what a moment it was when Rihanna showed up at the Met Gala in this Dolce & Gabbana tux. May this photo forever commemorate the era of the major-shoulder jacket (Rih sees your Balmain and raises you one), and the moment Rihanna's fashion took a turn for the edgy.

2010: Remember when Rihanna had flawless, flame-red corkscrew curls? And, occasionally they matched both her Elie Saab gown and the red carpet? That was a good year. Also, note this early example of flirting with transluscence. We all know the glorious places that would lead.

2011: At a fragrance launch in 2011, Rihanna looked smashing in a bright, feathered pantsuit. Likely the only time we'll use that phrase.

2012: Performing at that year's Victoria's Secret fashion show, Rihanna gave Angelina's leg a run for its money with this Vivienne Westwood gown, started a cottage industry of knockoff Chanel sunglasses, and helped kick-start the pearl trend, too.

2012: An unassuming look at first glance, you say? Au contraire. We couldn't resist including this bonus pic, also from 2012, because what you see here is the exact moment we collectively decided that we could maybe, just maybe, look incredibly hot in sweatpants. Our results may vary, but Rihanna remains the undisputed queen of athleisure.

2013: A night-out look that manages to incorporate all of the 2013 trends (crop tops! Boyfriend jeans! Holograms!) without looking try-hard in the least. This is RihRih, relaxed fashion icon with nothing to prove.

2014: In the front row of Alexander Wang's show last season, this is Rihanna as we know her now: a pinnacle of sexy B-girl style the likes of which we haven't seen since Aaliyah.

2015: Yeah, yeah, a lot of people thought it looked like a loofah. And, she was not the first to embrace Giambattista Valli couture on the red carpet. But, wearing the biggest, the poufiest, the pinkest dress in the room was a power move that commanded attention.
