Lights Has Delivered The Wanderlust Song Of The Summer

Perhaps it's just that time of the summer, but the wanderlust has set in. And, it's absolutely relentless. The days are getting shorter, the weather's still comfortable, and the evenings spattered with an oil-spilled sky are enough to make you want chase the sun across the nation so it never sets.
But, that's just not possible for most of us. So, we turn to music to fill that void. Canadian musician Lights Poxleitner, better known as Lights, has something to help at least facilitate your dreams of that one last summery escape. Her new album, Little Machines, isn't due out until September 23, but we've got the first taste of it here.

"Portal" is a minimal track: It ebbs and flows, swelling to an evanescent high before marching off toward some sublime place. Speaking with Refinery29, Lights says, "There are so many things that make 'Portal' special to me. It started as a one-chord experiment and was finished at the Earthship community in New Mexico on a solo-writing getaway. The drumbeat of the song is actually comprised of me recording baby-belly drumming when I was full term with my daughter."
The video, too, is equally wonderful. "This video is no ordinary video," Lights says. "Myself and a small, talented crew spent the day in an otherworldly glade about an hour outside of Toronto meandering through elvish woods and driving old cars. It was perfect." No, it's not the endless summer we're all chasing, but it's pretty damn close.
