11 Beauty Mistakes To Leave Behind For The New Year

Here at R29, we're of the opinion that there are no real mistakes when it comes to beauty. It's all good all the time. If it doesn't work for you, then just wash it off and try again next time. Mistakes are for spelling or division — not for beauty.
That said, there are some bad habits we can develop within our regimens. These no-no's run the gamut — from missing a step in our routine to being hard on ourselves about a particular haircut. They say an unexamined life is not worth living — shouldn't that count for your beauty routine as well?
We got to thinking: Which of these faux pas should we try to move on from next year? Ahead, find the subtle tweaks we plan to make for a better 2015. These mini mistakes are doing more harm than good — so why not kick 'em to the curb?

Biting Your Nails
It’s on top of your New Year’s resolution list every single year. We vote that in 2015, this pact to your fingers actually sticks. Not only is biting your nails awful for your hands, it’s also kinda nasty. In the words of your mother, "Do you know where your hands have been?"

Luckily, if you're ready to buckle down and quit, there are plenty of products to help you kick the habit. Those nasty-tasting polishes always work. Another helpful hint: One of our editors started booking regular manicures to help herself win the battle of the bite. That's a win-win if we ever heard one — you delete a gross habit from your life, and your nails look amazing.

Just like sleeping in your makeup, this is a beauty don't you’ve been told about time and time again. Leave it to the professionals, ladies. Any aesthetician or dermatologist will tell you that your skin heals faster when you don't pick it. That said, kicking the picking can be a tough endeavor. Luckily, we've got some tips for that.

Not Changing Your Routine With The Seasons
Repeat this mantra: Your skin changes throughout the year. What works for you in the summer will not work in the winter. When the chilly temps hit, your face is in need of a lot more moisture and protection than in the warmer months. Arm yourself with a good seasonal skin-care regimen next year, and you'll ring in 2016 with a glowing visage.

Let’s make 2015 the year we stop allowing others' opinions to influence our beauty decisions. If you want to wear false eyelashes to the office, go ahead with your bad self. Whether it was the Internet playing detective with Kylie Jenner's #LipGate, or gossip columns buzzing when Renée Zellweger hit the red carpet looking slightly different, 2014 was (unfortunately) the year beauty-shaming hit a fever pitch. Kinda sad, isn't it?

That's why we're declaring next year a shame-free zone. Does your friend spend hours on her makeup? Amazing. Does your sister wear nothing on her face except moisturizer? Great. Beauty is inclusive and extremely personal, so coming down on a person because of their choices isn't just mean, it's a waste of time.

No matter how many times we've said it, it bears repeating — you must, must wear an SPF of at least 30 every single day. Why? According to the CDC, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. Wearing SPF daily seriously cuts down your risk. And, it's surprisingly easy to make sure you're completely covered.

Even if you don’t shampoo your hair daily, you need to ensure your strands are getting properly hydrated. This means finding a conditioner that works for you, and using it often.
