Who Wore It Best: Boyfriend Vs. Girlfriend Style!

Girls and guys have been sharing clothes ever since the toga was en vogue, but these days, with self-proclaimed (and overly tapered) "boyfriend blazers" and "boyfriend jeans," it's hard to find innovative styles that really work for both parties. That's why we looked to super-cool, real-life couples who've got the swap sitch on lock—these hipster BF/GF duos share everything from flannels to headbands and leggings, plus those oversized sweaters that everyone wants to stock up on this fall. So, if your switch-up steals begin and end with a walk of shame (we won't tell), take note of these fresh-to-death downtowners whose garment game doesn't differentiate between the men's and women's departments. Our only question: Who wears it best?

What is your most-shared item?
"Alli's mom's old Les Miserable T-shirt."

What's one thing you refuse to share?
"I don't really refuse to share anything, though I do think she looks silly in my sneakers. They're a bit big on her."

Any tips for stealing style?
"Make sure you get your girlfriend's approval before leaving the house with her clothes on. You don't want her thinking you look like a girl."

What is the most shocking/unusual piece you share?
"I wear a lot of Alli's jewelry — bangles, bracelets, sometimes necklaces. I also wear her leggings as long johns."

What are some of your favorite NYC shops?
"Freeman's Sporting Club, Quality Mending Company."

Who is your favorite celebrity couple?
"Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon...though I hear they're recently separated? They count as celebrities, right?"

Describe your daytime fall look.
"Punk rock Hey Arnold!"

Trevor wears Levi's jeans, vintage Levi's jean jacket, white Converse, red socks, hand-me-down sweater, Freeman's Sporting Company pocket t-shirt.

Alexandra Wagner, Design Assistant, Jessica Barensfeld Jewelry and Court Shop.

What is your most-shared item?
"A pair of perfectly worn vintage Levi's 501s!"

What is something you refuse to share?
"Nothing comes to mind. My closet is Trev's closet (literally...) and everything in it is fair game."

Any tips for stealing style?
"We both have a thing for piling on layers, so I like to study how Trev layers his clothing, and then try to replicate it myself while adding a feminine sensibility to the look."

What is the most shocking/unusual piece you share?
"We wish we could say leather pants...but I think it would be either any number of silk scarves or my floral socks!"

What are some of your favorite NYC shops?
"I have a love affair with a vintage shop called Narnia. My other go-tos are Edith Machinist, Opening Ceremony, No. 6, Creatures of Comfort, Assembly, and Love, Adorned."

Who is your favorite celebrity couple?
"Of all time? George Harrison and Pattie Boyd or Jean-Michel Basquiat and Madonna."

Describe your daytime fall look.
"I like to dress in classic silhouettes, with one or two interesting details per outfit. I wear a lot of printed pants along with neutral-toned, loose button-downs and T-shirts, and I collect jackets, so without fail I always top it all off with a jacket. It's fun to wear one thing that's worn-in and personal, along with more polished pieces. So, at least one thing I'm wearing tends to be holey, frayed, or faded."

Alexandra wears a vintage Karl Lagerfeld dress, Alexander Wang t-shirt under a hand-me down sweater, vintage shoes, vintage hat, and Wolford tights.

Zooey Purdy, Refinery29 Software Engineer

What is your most-shared item?
"Any flannel, vintage T-shirt, or '70s-style polo."

What is something you refuse to share?
"Fortunately, most of the things I would refuse to share, Jason couldn't fit into (i.e.: don't go near my platform combat boots — I wear the same ones every day)!"

Any tips for stealing style?
"Anything with less structure usually works well. If you're wearing a big shirt of your boyfriend's on top, make sure to pair it with something tight on the bottom (my personal favorite: JEGGINGS)!"

What is the most shocking/unusual piece you share?
"We fight all the time over a long-sleeve camo hunting shirt that Jason got from Walmart (I have it right now, bahaha)!"

What are some of your favorite NYC shops?
"No Relation Vintage, Monk, OAK, Tokio 7."

Who is your favorite celebrity couple?
"Johnny and Lisa from The Room."

Describe your daytime fall look.
"Grunge, Boho, Goth, Mod."

Zooey wears a vintage red flannel, Stylestalker Viper Room leggings, vintage cardigan with detachable fur collar, Deena and Ozzy Buckle Heels.

Jason Dessalet, Ultra Marathon Athlete

What is your most-shared item?
"For sheer volume of swaps/steals, it has to be her UC Berkeley sweatpants; otherwise we swap flannels and polos everyday."

What is something you refuse to share?
"Anything Star Wars-related, and cereal."

Any tips for stealing style?
"For lanky guys, the hardest part of finding good clothes is the getting the proper length for sleeves and pant legs, and then reconcile that with the width of the clothes too. Vintage shirts are usually better-fitting for us, but you can't always wear something old, so wear a new shirt open, with a tight T-shirt under it."

What is the most shocking/unusual piece you share? "My old camo long sleeve, which I used for paintball."

What are some of your favorite NYC shops?
"11th and A flea market, Wendy Nichol."

Who is your favorite celebrity couple?
"Andrew W.K. and Cherie Lily."

Describe your daytime fall look.
"Eddie Vedder."

Jason wears Zooey's vintage red flannel, Scottie Pippen jersey, Puma high tops and Cheap Monday jeans.
