The Beauty Products Editors Refuse To Travel Without

As someone who likes to tote around six to eight lipsticks at all times, narrowing down my beauty products for a trip is stressful, to say the least. What kind of sadist made those overhead compartments so small? And don't get us started on TSA guidelines. Then, there are all those products to add to your routine that make travel easier (you'll need moisturizer for that dehydrating airplane air).

To get your stash in order and help lighten your load, we asked seven beauty editors to tell us which must-haves they're packing for their summer travels. Bon voyage!

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Peel Original Formula
“I never sleep or drink enough water on the plane, but this two-step peel makes skin look bouncy and rested.”

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray
“I blast my roots with this mist and mush it around for better-looking hair without a wash. It also smells sexy.”

Lucas' Pawpaw Ointment
“Put this on your lips, eyes, cuticles, the ends of your hair, your significant other — whatever — there’s no place on your body that can’t benefit from this Aussie dream balm.”

“I have up to five fragrances with me at ALL times. Right now I’m wearing Tom Ford Santal Blush mixed with Dior Bois D’Argent.”

Cel-Derma Clinical 3-Step Vita-Toning Mask
“I was introduced to this by the Glow Recipe girls — it's a three-step skin-care system in one super-convenient package. Wash your face with the cleanser, apply the brightening essence, and then apply the sheet mask on top. Boom — a full, efficacious skin-care regimen without having to tote around all those lotions and potions.”

& Other Stories Complete Face Palette In Festoon Classics
"Okay, okay, I know — this isn't even out on counter yet. However, ever since I laid my hot little hands on this all-in-one palette, it has completely changed my travel-makeup game. The cream formulas are amazing, and the colors are dead-on and so versatile. I can use the burgundy as either a full lipstick (applied with a brush) or a sexy stain (pushed into the lips with my finger). The black is perfect as a liner or smudged out as a smoky shadow, while the silver is a beautiful, subtle shimmer on the lids. And I like the Champagne pearl as my luminizer, applying it to the inner corners of my eyes, my cheekbones, my Cupid's bow, and anywhere else that needs some highlight. Bookmark this, guys — you're going to want to get your hands on it when it launches this fall."

& Other Stories Complete Face Palette in Festoon Classics, available in September at & Other Stories.

Christophe Robin Hydratant Santal Moisturizing Hair Cream
“Pretty much one of the most versatile hair stylers I've ever used, this works in all climates and is perfect for both a tousled air-dry finish and a smoother blowout. This one's gotten more mileage than my whole hair-care arsenal, combined.”

Ban Refresh Cooling Body Cloths
"Something about traveling makes me turn particularly ripe. Whether it's deplaning, or just wandering around in a new city, to help combat those sweaty, stinky moments I have these genius wipes on hand. They remove dampness and odor, but don't leave behind a sticky feel to your skin — just a fresh, powdery sensation. Much better than the usual hot-mess look I'm prone to while in transit."

Purely Perfect Cleansing Creme
“I don't know about you guys, but hands-down the thing that always ends up taking up the most room in my beauty luggage is my shampoo and conditioner. That's why this Cleansing Conditioner from the NYC salon Hairstory is a travel must — it gently cleans and conditions your hair in one go, leaving your locks soft, healthy, and nourished.”

Beautycounter Rosewater Uplifting Spray
“I'm a chronic spritzer — I use face mists to hydrate after cleansing, to refresh midday, and to set my makeup. So I always carry a bottle with me, especially when on a plane. A few spritzes of this and I avoid a total skin meltdown, a.k.a. plane pimples.”

SkinCeuticals Physical Matte UV Defense
“This is my new favorite SPF. It truly dries matte and won't aggravate acne-prone skin, and I love that it's an SPF 50 so my sun-sensitive skin is truly protected. It's also slightly tinted, so on a good skin day it can double as my base makeup and on a bad skin day it's also a primo primer that helps my foundation go on oh-so-smooth.”

Phace Bioactive Clarifying Serum
“This serum is seriously amazing. My skin gets congested easily from sunscreen and makeup, so I always apply this salicylic- and glycolic-acid and turmeric-packed formula over my face to help it stay clear. It also has a pH level of 3 to 3.5 to help bring your skin's pH levels back to where they need to be after washing your face (not to get all science-y on you, but this helps maintain a healthy acid-mantle level, which keeps out bacteria, pollution, and other environmental factors). It's basically the bomb dot com if you tend to break out easily.”

Oribe Bright Blonde Shampoo For Beautiful Color
“Since going platinum, I wash my hair every other time with a purple-based shampoo to keep any brassiness from the sun at a bare minimum. This one from Oribe doesn't over-tone my strands and leaves my hair a perfect bright-blonde shade.”

Illuminaré Moisturizing Mineral Foundation
“I'm obsessed with this foundation — every time I wear it, I get compliments on how dewy my skin is and how fresh-faced I look. The formula is the best, because it's lightweight and gives my skin the right amount of coverage I need without looking cakey. Plus, it contains SPF 20, so I don't need to put an additional layer of sunscreen on my face if I don't want to.”

Bold Lip Colors
“I am all about a bold lip color — I just love the way it can brighten up your face and make you look instantly polished, even when you haven't put on any other makeup. My go-tos are: NARS Audacious Lipstick in 'Natalie,' a vibrant coral shade that I saw a friend of mine wearing at a wedding and had to have immediately, and a dark-burgundy color called 'Dolce Inferno' from Dolce & Gabbana that makeup artist Christian McCulloch got me hooked on — both of them never leave my bag!"

Almay Longwear & Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover Pads
“I am super-picky about makeup remover. These not only remove mascara and liner completely, but they don’t count as a liquid when I’m doing a carry-on. Boom.”

Revive Light Therapy Full-Face Beauty Panel Light Therapy
“There is great research supporting the use of red and blue LED lights for better skin. Whether I’m traveling to a celebration or a beach, this panel’s blue and red LED lights help combat last-minute breakouts or overexposure to the sun, respectively. Battling both? The third setting turns all lights blue and red at the same time. I lie in bed with it over my face for 20 minutes at a time.”

Laura Geller Retractable Powder Brush
“I use this for both bronzer and blush when I’m on the road, and my makeup bag is infinitely less dirty inside because of it. Plus, the bristles are higher quality than in most travel brushes.”

Tarte Power Pigment In Blushing Bride
“This color falls in-between red and rose, so it goes with any outfit, and can be worn as a light tint or a full-on opaque lipstick. Versatility is clutch!”

Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Defense SPF 30
"I plow through this toxin-free sunscreen when I’m on the beach or spending time outside when I travel. It uses zinc oxide to protect skin, yet magically blends in — no 'ghosting' effect — unlike any zinc SPF I’ve tried before."

Eau Thermale Avène Thermal Spring Water
“I use it before and after makeup, and midday to refresh. It’s also ideal for hydrating regularly on the plane, when you don’t want to put moisturizer on over foundation. Plus, it just feels good to use.”

Laneige Cushion Compact
“This cover-up has great coverage, but is lightweight and with SPF. Plus, because it’s a compact, I can put it in my carry-on without adding it to my liquids Ziploc.”

Bumble And Bumble Surf Infusion Salt Spray
“When I go on vacation, my hair goes on vacation too. No pulling, no prodding, and certainly no blowdrying (I don't have room for that in my suitcase, and Lord knows I'm not using a hotel blowdryer. Those things are the worst). Instead, I spritz this salt spray through my mid-lengths and ends. I love Bumble and bumble's new formula, which has nourishing oils so it gives you that beachy, wavy look without drying the eff out of your hair."

Sultra The Bombshell One-Inch Curling Rod
“After a day of running around and air-drying, I touch up random sections with the curling rod to make my hair look a bit neater for dinner. It takes five minutes — instead of an hour — and I'm not sweating in the bathroom trying to wield a round brush while my boyfriend taps his foot at the door. Everybody wins!”

Avène High Protection Tinted Compact
“Meet my facial sunscreen and foundation for every vacation. The tinted cream offers great coverage, is gentle on all skin types, and silences all the haters who say you shouldn't wear makeup to the beach.”

Oribe Creme For Style
“This is one of the most versatile styling products, ever, especially for a sticky beach vacation. I use it to detangle after swimming, as a pre-shampoo treatment, to smooth back my hair into a slick chignon, as pre-blowout prep, or to tamp down dry ends or flyways. My boyfriend also uses it to style his hair. I usually pack two travel-size versions and end up going through both before the end of the trip.”

IOPE Air Cushion
“It’s foundation! It’s SPF! It’s incredibly lightweight and natural-looking, yet capable of covering even the angriest of pimples! In other words, this genius cushion is good enough to warrant an entire year’s supply of exclamation points.”

Yes To Carrots Fragrance-Free Wipes
“These wipes are gentle, but they lift off makeup quickly and thoroughly. They’re great for the actual traveling time, too — I pack them in my carry-on and use them around hour three of a plane ride. It feels so refreshing and keeps my skin feeling suitably pampered…even if I’m wedged in seat 28B.”

Avène Ultra-Light Hydrating Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50
“Unless you are planning a vacation of polar nights, sunscreen should be on your packing list. This one feels like nothing on the skin, it has broad-spectrum SPF 50, and it’s TSA-friendly. I carry a bottle in my purse, so I never have an excuse not to reapply.”

Stowaway Extreme Lash Mascara
“Yes, this mascara is small — and therefore travel-friendly — but it’s also just plain versatile. One coat makes my lashes look well-defined, but still natural; two is enough if I’m going out at night. It doesn’t clump or smear, and because of its slim profile, it takes up next to no room in my makeup bag.”

Dermalogica Oil Free Matte SPF 30
“My favorite thing to do in a new place is just walk around for hours exploring, which means SPF is a must regardless of the time of year (yes, I’ve managed to burn my forehead in the winter!). Hands-down, Dermalogica’s oil-free, matte sunscreen is my favorite. It works as a great base for makeup, and just got me through a 95-degree, five-hour stroll around Austin without any redness.”

Bumble And Bumble Surf Travel Set
“Between harder or softer water, bad shower pressure, and wimpy hotel blowdryers, everything is working against you hair-wise when you travel. That’s why I always bring mini versions of my favorite Bumble and bumble Surf shampoo and conditioner and Surf salt spray with me. It’s worth the precious space in your carry-on to avoid using hotel products, and gives you a shot at a good hair day."

Clinique Acne Solutions Clinical Clearing Gel
“I don’t know if it’s the stress of flying, the change in climate, or the time difference, but I inevitably break out on vacation. The best spot treatment for twenties-to-thirties skin that I’ve found is Clinique’s Clearing Gel. Unlike most salicylic acid spot treatments geared toward teens, this one has only 1% sal acid — a gentler alternative for normal (or older) skin types. I just dab it on spots that look like they’re going to erupt before bed, and my skin is clear in the morning — without any crusty dry patches.”
