4 New Ways To Show Off Your Favorite Spring Dresses

Bare legs, your time is almost here. The next few weeks will see us dusting off boxes of colors we forgot existed — orange, yellow, bright greens, how we've missed you. More than anything, though, we've missed our easy, breezy spring dresses. A whole outfit packed into one throw-on-and-go item can't be beat. But re-wearing the same rotation of pretty pieces sure loses its allure when you have the looks down pat: A floral fit-and-flare plus neutral, yet trusty, wedges and a denim jacket incites a few sartorial yawns when put on repeat. At the end of the day, a style rut in spring is just as real as a style rut in winter, just without the layers.

Before you give up on your shirt dresses and trapeze frocks too soon, take a stab at these chic combos to give them (new) life. From pairing them with cropped jeans so your ankles still get some sun action, to adding a simple T-shirt — no one will even notice you've worn the same dress for three Insta #OOTDs in a row.

One of our favorite underrated styling tips is wearing a dress over jeans. Play down a fun mod piece by popping a pair of cropped mom or boyfriend jeans underneath (do a simple front tuck if the hem is short enough); the boxy silhouette revitalizes its usual trapeze style. Feel free to play up your accessories with the newly causal ensemble: A faux croc-skin heel and a matching pony-hair clutch prove the sky's the limit when taking a simple dress to the next level.

Even if spring is still a little too far off where you live, it doesn’t mean you can’t work in your favorite warm weather dress, anyway. A basic shirtdress can be transformed with, you guessed it, layers. We love this button-up with a thick rope belt. Just roll up the sleeves and pop open the collar buttons to let a patterned turtleneck shine through. Basics pair well with basics, so we stuck with a gray and white striped sweater. Embellish the outfit a little more with a bomber jacket, and these to-die-for peep-toe slippers.

With a long-strap mini bag and strappy sandals, a short shirtdress is your easy-date-look lifeline. But adding some visual weight to a sweet frock also makes it perfect for when you're in an edgier style mood. A playful faux-leather jacket, statement shades, and thick-soled lace-ups balance out the dress’ sheer chiffon and softly pleated skirt, while a bold sock is a wink to fellow fashion-lovers.

We love the slip dress trend, but if you’re anything like us, it’s difficult to find a way to wear it day-to-day when you’re not a street style star or heading to a semi-formal event. There’s only one thing better than staring at a pretty item, though, and that’s wearing it. Drag it out of your closet and pair it with your favorite tee (long sleeve or short, weather depending). Worn with a sneaker, your cocktail-hour dress is now daytime appropriate. We played down our favorite slinky dress silhouette even more with an oversized denim coat for a look that’s just begging to be Instagrammed.

Take your favorite button-up floral piece and give it a work-appropriate upgrade. Unbutton the dress halfway and throw on a pair of wide-legged trousers, transforming your weekend brunch look to meeting-ready while still letting you rock a vibrant spring palette. Tie things together with stacked heels that match with and without the pants to take the look from work to drinks.
