5 Ways To Upgrade Your Basic Smoky Eyes

Standard smoky eyes are the Ugg boot of the beauty world. You probably wore them a lot in college, and now you pull them out whenever you want to put on something comfortable. But the smudgy blacks, taupes, and grays of smoky eyes past have recently started to feel a little like those poor Ugg boots — tired, worn-out, and completely lacking in oomph.

But, for those of us who still love the rock-'n'-roll allure of the smoky eye, never fear. Lately, we've seen a bunch of cool, inspired versions of the look. From neon colors to glitter, click through to see six new takes that are anything but passé.

We loved the choice of lavender for the smoky eyes at N° 21, but there's another detail that makes these beautiful. Along with the pastel hue, the eyes were decorated with tiny sparkles for a pretty feminine finish.

At Roksanda, models sported a jewel-toned blue around their eyes. The pigment was concentrated on the center of the lids, and then blended outward for a cool, diffused effect.

Leave it to Diane von Furstenberg to make smoky eyes look fresh and incredibly chic. Makeup artist Pat McGrath swept shimmery green shadow all the way around the eyes before pressing shimmery blue shadow into the upper lashline. Glossy nude lips are also a must.

We flipped when we saw the gorgeous, deconstructed smoky eyes at Anteprima. Instead of covering the entire lid in pigment, models rocked blue from the inner corners of their eyes to about halfway across, and all the way up to the brows.

At the Serena Williams Signature Collection show, the warm pink shadow billowed out far from the eyelids, doubling as highlighter. (Just look at her cheekbones.) We love the rose hue, but you can also try it with Champagne or gold shadow for a more subtle, gilded effect.
