Professional hockey player. Vogue intern. Hickey Freeman frontman. And now a member of the modern day Mad Men crew at major advertising and creative agency Lipman. Sean Avery's career path reads like a James Franco novel co-written by Brett Easton Ellis. He's an oft-shirtless intellectual whose art collection equals his cache of kicks. An infamous on-court agitator, but thoughtful, soft-spoken, and generous (he gave us a Gucci shirt as a parting gift). Though he's had no shortage of column inches (and mega-pixels) devoted to his every, seemingly manic move — and ample pecs — we were still keen to get in on the Avery evolution.
His Soho loft does the talking for him — with Tom Sachs, Terry Richardson, and Warhol on the wall (not to mention a Harry Benson snap from Anna Wintour signed, "For Sean, surely our most famous intern ever"), first edition Hardy Boys novels in the bedroom, and a golden Philippe Starck gun floor lamp by the balcony, his brainwaves are almost tactile. Then there's his closet. Between a smoke break to talk all things Marriage Equality ("We're taking it to Maryland," he half shouts) and his newest endeavor in the bold world of branding, Avery —clad, as is he wont, in only a towel and tattoos — literally opens up his multiple wardrobes, letting us help him style some looks that include everything from ultra-tailored Hickey suits, Givenchy shorts, and a stop-and-stare pair of shiny Lanvin lace-ups. Even his gym get-ups get involved with Wang and Y-3. "Call me dandy," he says, just a bro sitting on the kitchen counter, when we ask him if he's single. Really, who could argue with that?
