Your Palm Springs Dream Home Is Here

Well, it may look like a dream home, but this little slice of SoCal heaven is blogger and photographer Sarah Yates' day-to-day reality. Lucky duck.
As we walked through the peaceful, minimalist home that Yates shares with her husband, we were struck by more than a few familiar sights. After all, we've been following her blog, A House in the Hills, and pinning beautiful images from her wedding-photography site, Birds of a Feather, for quite some time. But — surprise, surprise — this lifestyle wiz has been on a decorating binge, tricking out her place with a few modern heirlooms, inexpensive gets from Target, and unexpected, exquisite design finds.

With a spot of tea in her amazing kitchen, a photo shoot, and a quick chat about decor, style, and her growing career, Yates made this afternoon house tour a real daydream. Hair & Makeup by Tanika McConnell.

Wow. Your place is something else. So, why don't you tell us about what you do with House in the Hills?
"My job involves, at the root of it, coming up with pretty/fun/interesting things to share on my site and finding the best way to do it."

And, what's the best part about it?
"The thing I love most is that every day is different, and that every day provides me an opportunity to play around in a creative world that I love."

How did it all get started?
"I started A House in the Hills because I wanted to carve out a little corner of the interweb to explore some of my creative interests — I wanted a place to share the things I love. I was also looking for an excuse to spend more time in the kitchen. For the first six months, I was testing the waters to see what it was all about, but I quickly realized I wanted to turn the site into a full-time adventure!"

So, what are your workdays typically like if you're playing around in your creative world?
"I don’t have a ton of structure in my workdays. I have to be flexible depending on what needs to be done. But, generally, there is some email-answering, a photo shoot of some sort, social media, and breaks for good food!"

Where do you get your decorating inspiration?
"Travel! I love to pick up decorating ideas from hotels, restaurants, and the random spaces I wind up in when we’re having adventures outside of our home. I also love to bring items home to incorporate into our decor that remind us of the places we’ve been and loved."

And, what would you say is your overall strategy for incorporating all that in your home?
"Well, I'd say my decorating secret lies in ignoring the idea that our home should be a certain style and, instead, focusing on filling it with things we love."

Enough about your home — let's talk fashion and beauty. How would you describe your style?
"I'd say I’m a bit of a chameleon. I love to mix it up and play with trends. I can love something super-girly one minute and want to be in tomboy clothes the next. I admire people who have a clear vision in their style; I’m just too all over the place to be that person. My go-to outfit for daytime lately is skinny jeans, a chunky sweater, and booties. My go-to outfit for night is a skirt, booties, a blouse, and red lips."

And, what's your favorite fashion trend of the moment?
"I love, love, love oversized jackets! Oh, and booties. I couldn’t be happier about the amount of booties a gal has to choose from these days."

Given that advice, what's your proudest accomplishment to date?
"That I’ve truly created a life that makes me so happy and is filled with people (and animals) that I love. I can’t imagine anything that will ever surpass that as my greatest feat."
