Cautious About Color? Blogger Sai Sankoh Will Change Your Mind

It's rare that an outfit post stops us in our tracks — except of course, when we're perusing Herndon-based blogger Sai Sankoh's site, Because I Am Fabulous.
The Sierra Leone native knows a thing or two about glamour, so don't be surprised if you see her rocking a feather collar necklace, thigh-high Louboutin boots, and some of the boldest statement jewelry you've ever seen — all at once!. (Oh, and did we mention that her closet is completely insane? Just wait 'til you see it.) Read on to meet Sai, peep her enviable collection of vintage and designer threads, and take some cues from this color-coordinating pro.

What inspires your style every day?
"I love checking out other great blogs. And my mood is another thing that inspires me. I always want to be happy, and certain colors and pieces just give me that. Sometimes I wake up and I am so uninspired, I just wear a huge kaftan or my pajamas and a t-shirt. Then I remember a great piece I have, and just run into my closet and match it up with something fun. I am a really big risktaker, and [am] never afraid to try new things."

What motivates you to keep up your blog?
"I love to express myself, and having a personal blog helps me to do so in so many ways. I write about whatever I feel like, and it feels good to know others can relate to it. I'm one of the few bloggers from Sierra Leone, and getting emails from people who tell me I inspire them makes my day. People are so kind and have just been really supportive when it comes to Because I am Fabulous. [The site] is a home to me and two other bloggers, and I love learning from what other cool stuff my co-bloggers Melvyna Clinton and Jean Claude have to share."

You have a lot of beautiful clothes! How did you collect your wardrobe?
"I love to mix up everything from high-end designers to thrifted goodies. I love bargains, but I still want to look and feel like a million bucks, even in a $5 dress — so I love to get pieces with great details and quality. At first, I used to buy whatever; but now, it's pieces I am in love with. So, invest in great pieces you can wear over and over — pieces that are timeless. I also shop whenever I travel. I have gotten some great jewelry from street vendors in Sierra Leone."

What are your favorite local stores?
"I love Neiman's Last Call at Potomac Mills. For shoes, I prefer Saks and Neiman's at Tysons Galleria. I love Unique Thrift Store. I just found out about consignment stores a couple of months ago, and I believe they are heaven on earth, so I usually [go to] Fashion Exchange [in McLean] and Treasure Trove for consignment bargains."

What are your favorite pieces in your wardrobe?
"Right now, I love this Gianfranco Ferré jacket and matching top I just bought. It's so amazing, and I am waiting for the perfect cold day to wear it. I love my red Louis Vuitton Alma MM bag. It's so bright, shiny, and over the top, like my personality. I also love this colorful kimono I bought at a consignment store in McLean. It gives me life, and it seems to go with everything."

Your closet is really organized — any tips for how readers can organize theirs?
"Thanks, but gosh, I don't feel that way at all. In my larger closet, I have the pieces I wear the most, or that are new, or that I want to wear soon. If you shop a lot, like I do, get rid of pieces that are worn out or not in the best condition. By doing so, you'll be able to display your pieces better, and you can see what you have in your closet and make use of [it]."

Any favorite blogs you read every day?
I love Denisio [Truitt's] blog The Ravenous Creator — she is so amazing, and inspires me a lot. The President Wears Prada is so up-to-date with everything and just great. SpicyCandyDC and La Petite Marmoset were [some] of the first sites I came across, and I adore their style. Karla's Closet, Nini Style, and (of course) Refinery29 is a site I check out every day."
