Facebook Page Has Heaps Of Vintage (And Incredible) MIA Photos

With a fascination with the new and cutting edge, Miami is not known for its staunch sense of history — or at least, not for landmarks like the hallowed Liberty Bell in Philadelphia or the storied walls of New York's Ellis Island. But with the sudden fascination with the glamourous and sophisticated '50s (started by Mad Men, continued with Magic City), Miami's shiny, jet-setting past is being dusted off and set on display, by both television...and those who were actually around to experience Dade County at its most classic.
Which is why a homegrown Facebook page, which focuses on the '60s, '70s, and '80s in Miami, is such a treat. Images are collected not by historical societies or via Hollywood lenses, but by actual MIA residents. Not only are there images of the airport being built or colorful, old-school ticket stubs, but commenters hop in and share their own memories. A fateful Rush concert in '81 led to a tear-gassing of nearly all attendees, visitors recall a famous Miami snow storm, and history buffs reminisce over eating at the first Burger King. The page, titled "I Grew Up in South Florida in the 60's 70's and 80's", isn't just a nostalgic romp through Miami — it is an organic and communal American history lesson.
