How To Turn This Superfood Into An Effective Exfoliant

Illustrated by Elliot Salazar.
The beauty world has taken its cue from the food industry and is now highlighting superfoods, including quinoa, as the beauty ingredients of the moment. Research has shown that hydrolyzed proteins from this beloved grain form a barrier to protect and repair hair and skin. Some even claim that quinoa's magnesium and vitamin B2 can increase skin elasticity and cell regeneration when applied topically, though there is no current research to back up those claims. Personally, I love using quinoa as a physical exfoliator. Here’s an easy quinoa-yogurt DIY scrub that uses ingredients you may already have in your pantry.

Ingredients
1/2 cup uncooked quinoa (any variety — white, golden, red, or black)
1 cups water
1/4 cup organic yogurt
1 tsp honey
Illustrated by Elliot Salazar.
Instructions
1. Measure 1/2 cup of quinoa and place into a fine-mesh strainer. Rinse thoroughly with cool water. Rub and swish the quinoa with your hand while rinsing. Drain. 2. In a small saucepan, add ½ cup quinoa and 1 cup of water. Bring to a rolling boil. 3. Turn heat down to the lowest setting. Cover and cook for 15 minutes. 4. Remove from heat and let stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Uncover and let cool for another 5-10 minutes. Note: You can make the quinoa the night before and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. 5. Mix cooked (and cooled) quinoa with the yogurt and the honey. This exfoliating scrub can be massaged on your face and body. Rinse with warm water. Note: It may be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to two days.
