Met On: Myspace
Length of Relationship:
Coming up on 7 years — recently married!
What website did you guys meet on?
"I happened to be cruising a mutual friend’s Myspace page looking for dates after a bad breakup and picked Micah out of the crowd. I don’t think I would have pursued it if my friend didn’t freak out and say it was perfect and why didn’t she think of that sooner. But, we met because I was trolling Myspace."
Who made the first move online?
"I had an art show coming up so I used it as an excuse to 'friend' him — is that what it was called then? I forget — and invite him to the city. I basically stalked his profile, though. In fact, he could see that I was doing it. Remember those tracking things on Myspace? Yeah, he had one. Shame. But, it got my point across."
What's one thing you remember really standing out about your SO's profile?
"Well, right off the bat, Amy was gorgeous! I didn’t know what was going on at the time, but I knew that she was cute, had an adorable dog, and listened to a lot of the same music I did, which always helps."
Why did you choose the site you did?
"Well, I wouldn’t say it was a dating site at that time. In fact, I was really ashamed to tell people the story of how we met on Myspace because it made me seem super creepy. But, now online trolling is the norm. Even the friends who used to have the most fun laughing at how we met are on OkCupid
Where did you guys go on your first date? And, what grade would you give it?
"Well, Micah was sick. I would give it an A, but that would be selfish. He didn’t feel well. We got sushi and ate it on a playground. It was sweet. I didn’t think he liked me because he was so distant. Turns out he had the Norovirus. True story. Then he gave it to me. It was very romantic."
"I missed the art show that Amy had because I was deathly ill, and I didn’t want her to think I was blowing her off, so I came up the next day. I was sweaty, and hadn’t eaten anything in five days, and sushi is pretty much the most disgusting thing to look at when you’ve been sick for a week. She took me to Bernal Heights and I sat far away from her because I was still feeling crumby, so she thought I wasn’t interested. But, I had a great time."
Why do you think online dating used to get a bad rep?
"I think it used to be seen as a last resort or something. Like the person couldn’t function in regular society enough to meet people in person, so they had to test it out online first. Now I think our interactions are happening more and more in the digital world, making it more like real life."
How have you seen online dating evolve over the last couple of years?
"I think it’s just become more normalized. Almost everyone I know who is single is on a dating site. Worst case scenario, your ego is boosted by a few random people that think you seem interesting, even if you’re not into them. Best case scenario, you meet someone really great."
