If Diana Vreeland were to return to the front lines of New York Fashion Week today, she'd be shocked by the revolution that's happening in footwear. The fashion flock has been shying away from dramatically high stilettos in favor of more practical kicks: While red soles once dominated the Lincoln Center terrain, slip-ons and tennis shoes are now the rule.

The mot du jour for spring '15 was clearly "athletic," which we've felt everywhere from Alexander Wang's sneaker-inspired collection to DKNY's metallic bombers. And, comfort seems to have staged a coup. The most ubiquitous logos on NYC's streets weren't Chanel's or Prada's — although, they still made ritual appearances — but Nike's signature swoosh and Adidas' trademark stripes.

Before you dust off your old gym shoes, keep in mind that there's an art to dressing them up. From finding a muted hue so as to not detract from your show-stopping skirt, to seeking out the brightest and chunkiest retro Nikes to attract the photo g's lens, it's all about balance. Ahead, we turn to NYFW's finest feet to inspire our comfy-shoe game this fall.
