New York's It Bags By Neighborhood

Out-of-towners just don't get it. Living in the Big Apple usually means having a big purse closet—you've got to rethink your bag each day based on where you're going after all. If you're riding your bike over the Brooklyn Bridge, your best bet is a backpack. Headed to Chelsea? You know you need your artful carryall. But, decisions aren't easy—or obvious. So, we're bringing you "The Bags Of New York," a match-up mashup that shows the go-to satchel you'll need…for every NYC neighborhood.
There are variations on each piece of arm candy on this list, but as folks who have found ourselves downtown without a handbag that could fit an extra pair of flats, we feel pretty sure that this cheat sheet is a must. Tourists (and purse-phobic NYCers) take note: Here are the It bags you should carry to embody our 'hoods. Now, represent.

Chelsea is known for its so-amazing art scene, and while galleristas don't always wear all black, we're into the idea of a dark-colored carryall, perfect for all the art show pamphlets (not to mention perfect for every season). This Lanvin satchel is soft, subtly two-toned, and ideal for a day on the West Side.

The satchel is a great school (and post-grad!) bag, and therefore on point for (a lot of) the residents in the East Village. But much like the neighborhood's shops and restos, we had to go with something sophisticated and unique, too.

Dr. Martens Large Liberty Satchel, $310, available at Dr. Martens.

The Upper East Side is so often used in the same sentence as Gossip Girl (ugh, here's another to add to the list). But there's just as much to see (museums), do (eat, eat, eat), and buy (hello Madison Avenue!) up there as, well, anywhere. For this tony hood, we chose a mid-sized bag that's perfect for busy UES ladies, be they native moms, shop girls, or yes, dramatic high schoolers...

J.Crew Edie Attaché Bag, $288, available at J.Crew.

Whether you're toting home wares from one of the awesome flea markets, packing your towel for McCarren park, or are just riding home from work in Manhattan, many Brooklyn-centric activities are best accessed by bike. And biking is, you guessed it, best served with a backpack. We're into the natural, light feel of this taupe one, and it just so happens to be eco-friendly, too.

Essl Austrian Backpack, $79, available at Farfetch.

Quiet, cool, and okay a little pricey, the West Village is home to some so-good grub destinations and chic young professionals, to boot. We thought it appropriate to call upon an elegant bucket bag that can take you from shopping to dining (and has room for commuter and cobblestone-ready flats, too!).

Wendy Nichol Natural Iris Bullet Bag, $750, available at Wendy Nichol.

Just a stone's throw from Soho without the pushing and shoving (mostly), Nolita has unique boutiques and watering holes that pack a serious punch. Likewise, we fell in love with this eye-catching Reed Krakoff bag that we think is a good blend of the styles and je ne sais quoi found on many city-dwellers and hot spots of this same beloved area. Meet you at Ruby's?

Reed Krakoff Atlantique in Zephyr, $1,590, available at Forward Forward.
