Welcome back to work, party people! We know it's been a long holiday hibernation, but it's 2013 — time for a new you, a new year, and maybe some new decor for your apartment, too. Now, we understand if an across-town move or total overhaul seems out of reach (and out of budget). So, we asked our favorite home-decor gurus to show us how to get maximum impact from little changes.
Maxwell Ryan from Apartment Therapy and Kristina Rinaldi from Rinaldi interiors have teamed up to give you 16 new swap-ins to make sure your crib looks as fresh as your new outlook on life. From a bold piece of statement art to practical shelving units to graphic throws and futuristic terrariums, this list packs a super-luxe punch to get you in the mood for a much-needed, at-home revamp. As for that mess in your closet… you're on your own with that one.

Add A Wall Shelf

“I've always loved this shelf design by Alvar Aalto for Artek. One of his classic designs from 1936, this simple design puts the bracket on top, not on the bottom, allowing it to double as a bookend. They are particularly awesome in multiples. It comes in two sizes (one deeper than the other) and three colorways (natural, black and white lacquer).”

Alvar Aalto Wall Shelf, $425, available at Keep.

Change Out the Rugs

“From The Rug Co.'s new, more accessible Studio Collection, this simple, very attractive weave pattern caught my eye in soft blue. Hand knotted of 100% Tibetan wool, it's also available in yellow and a neutral grey.”

Cable Blue Rug, $1,128, available at Keep.

Switch The Seating

“I first saw these at the Arch Digest Show in NYC last January. From the super high-end BDDW, these guys are still pricy, but a notch down from their kin. Designed in two sizes by Tyler Hays of BDDW and made with Lostine in Philadelphia, they are 'handcrafted from variegated sycamore and a sturdy sheet of leather,' this minimal piece is marked by an arched cutout base and contoured seat."

Morris Bar Stool, $548, available at Anthropologie.

Keep In Mind Of What’s Underfoot!

“If traditional or vintage or eclectic is your style, you should check out these braided wool rugs from The Bean. I've been in a house with them and they are deeply colorful, hard-wearing, and warm under foot. Personally, I love the red colorway, and the fact that you can get this thing in 11 different sizes.”

L.L.Bean Bean's Braided Wool Rug, $429, available at L.L.Bean.
