While the natural hair movement has gained momentum in the past few years, women have been choosing to embrace their God-given textures for much longer than that. Yep, contrary to popular belief, there were trailblazers long before Viola Davis decided to go sans wig on the red carpet.
From Angela Davis' iconic Afro to Chaka Khan's voluminous curls to Grace Jones' flat-top fade, we're highlighting the women, past and present, who've made strides in breaking down hair barriers. And, while we can't forget about the men who've helped challenge the strand status quo (The Jackson 5, Prince, and Jimi Hendrix come to mind), we don't think they had to deal with the same level of societal pressure when it came to their appearance. But, we praise them all the same.
