My Style: Inside Andrea Linett's Rad LES Digs

Full disclosure: We've been big Andrea Linett fans for a long time. And we know we're not the only ones. During her long tenure as the founding creative director of Lucky magazine , Linett drew legions of followers who flocked to the mag month after month just for her inspired editorials and irreverent yet totally laid-back approach to personal style and dressing. And now, as the creative director of eBay fashion, she's bringing a lot of that honesty, fun, and fashion fearlessness to a whole new audience (Read: Amazing fashion does NOT have to be scary!). Truly, it's hard to describe Linett's own personal style: Kind of edgy, kind of minimal, kind of no-nonsense chic. However you sum it up, it's always cool, which is why we wanted to hear more about how she dresses, where she shops, what she loves, and where it all goes down—in her modernist mix-and-match Lower East Side apartment.
Just click through the slideshow (and interview!) to learn more about this local visionary's recent obsessions and rules of the wardrobe...and we thought we had a lot of shoes!

Where do you hail from?
"I was born in NYC and we moved to Summit, New Jersey when I was five. I now live on the Lower East Side."

What do you love most about your Lower East Side neighborhood and your apartment?
"I love how my neighborhood is still very much old-school. There is the pickle man, the bagel place, the kosher butcher, yet there are amazing shops and great restaurants, too. And I love my tailor (Rivington Tailor). He just took up a pair of pants in about ten minutes that I needed at the last minute for a trip to Paris."

As the founding creative director for Lucky magazine, you really transformed the modern shopping experience. It was almost like a form of e-commerce before e-commerce! What kind of shopper are you, and how did that experience influence how you shop?
"I am a habitual shopper. I love looking online and going into stores as I go about my day. I rarely make a plan to shop, unless it’s at the flea market, and then I call my friend Ron. When I get inspired, and it’s usually by someone I see on the street, I have that in mind when I shop. There is no method to my madness. I buy what I like."

What are some of your favorite designers or shops of the moment?
"I don’t really have one favorite designer, but I like how Isabel Marant has an uncanny ability to know what a certain kind of girl wants to look like and then serves it up every season. I’ve always been a fan of Martin Margiela, Mona Kowalska, and Maria Cornejo. Michael Kors makes beautiful clothes and always stays true to himself. Right now I’m wanting everything by Built by Wendy—I just bought a bunch of her stuff including the Lap tee that looks like an oversize Carter’s baby shirt, and the “solid gold” coat, which is a super simple and chic black wool number, but when you take it off, it’s got this crazy glam rock gold lining. I also love all the cute mid-priced labels in Paris like Maje and Sandro...the third floor of Printemps has them all in one place. In NYC I always check out A Detacher, Assembly, No. 6, Creatures of Comfort,  Tenthousandthings (for dreaming), Love, Adorned, Pixie Market, and, of course, Edith Machinist has the best vintage. In L.A. I always stop into Guild on Abbott Kinney in Venice,TenOverSix on Melrose, and the super-cool Cerre for the most amazing leather pieces."

Tell us your five wardrobe essentials...
"I have seven! Jeans, ankle boots, soft, slightly thin and slightly big T-shirts, cashmere grandpa cardigan (I layer one under a jacket when it’s cold and I’m almost always cold!), a classic blazer with a twist (I just bought a good skinny black satin wool one and an oversized cream one), a great bag that holds all my stuff, and a classic leather biker jacket."

You and your husband ride a motorcycle around NYC often. What's a bike-appropriate outfit these days?
"I’m actually a little scared of the bike. He’s a good rider, but what about all the other crazies on the road?! I’m just a poser, but he’s serious about riding, so he makes me wear leather gloves, a long-sleeve jacket and sensible closed shoes like boots. Of course, I love leather jackets and boots, so it’s a look I can get into. And I loved picking out a helmet...I chose one with very Ska-like black and white checks on it."

Any fashion mis-steps you're willing to share?
"I can’t think of anything I’ve done that was so bad lately (or maybe I’m just blocking it out!), but I do remember a time in college when I thought it would be cool to wear a single suspender across my chest. Yikes."

As you know, I am one of eBay's most passionate shoppers. What drew you to the company as its new creative director?
"I have always loved eBay, and, in fact, I can walk around my apartment pointing out all the things I’ve bought on eBay through the years. I felt like it was this awesome place and needed to look and feel like it. I’m thrilled that I get to be a part of the transformation!"

What's the best thing you've bough ton eBay recently?
"Some awesome Margiela boots that I had missed out on when they were in the store. Brand new in the box at a fraction of the original price. And other favorites are my coveted Hermès Medor watch and a crazy old mine-cut diamond ring from my generous friend Daniel. Who doesn’t love eBay?!"

Your husband, Michael Waring is a fantastic photographer. How did you meet?
"We met on a shoot about eight years ago and have worked together ever since. We’ve shot in some pretty amazing places—Prague, Amsterdam, Sevilla, St. Bart’s, Buenos Aires, Marrakech. We’re lucky that we work well together. He knows what I like and vice versa. And he seems really quiet and reserved, but he’s actually really funny. Read his blog I Want to be Him and see for yourself.

Do you influence each other's style?
"I think I might influence his style a little. He buys what I think is cool for a guy (I’m pretty persuasive). And I’ll wear heels once in a while because, hey, he’s a guy and likes them. Sometimes we come to the front door ready to go out in the same outfit like recently when we both had jeans, a trench, and sand suede boots and one of us had to change!"

I'm an obsessive closet cleaner. How often do you purge your wardrobe?
"I don’t clean out my closet nearly enough, but a few months ago I must have given about six giant leaf bags full to Housing Works. Come to think of it, this question has inspired me to purge. I mean really, I basically wear the same thing everyday anyway, and how many striped tee shirts and pairs of skinny jeans does one person need? Time to open an eBay store!"

What's the one think you can really never see yourself wearing?
"I can’t see myself wearing a pencil skirt, as much as I like them on other people. Or ballet flats (ditto). I would never wear red lipstick, mostly because, I really don’t have the kind of lips that warrant it. I would love to wear eyeliner, but I’m too much of a spaz to put it on right."

As a huge eBay fan, what can we look forward to from the site?
"Right away, I took what I do on my blog I Want to be Her and brought a similar feature to eBay under the name Style Stories. We profile a different chic man or woman each week and they share their shopping secrets, saved eBay search words, and lots of other fun things about themselves. It’s fun and voyeuristic and it’s basically like shopping with your coolest friend directly on eBay. We also feature a different fashion story each week on our home page. I am looking forward to rolling out tons more editorial content and exclusive sales in the coming months.

You used to travel a ton, and probably still do quite frequently. What did you learn about packing then when you were at Lucky and what do you still pack now whenever you travel?
"Packing is always hard no matter how many times you do it. Even though it’s tempting to say “I’m going to Paris, so I should bring my Victorian velvet jacket that I never, ever wear, because I will wow them on the Rue St. Honoré!” this tactic rarely works. Whatever you’ve got in constant rotation at that moment is what you should pack. Maybe throw in a wild card for fun, like those crazy shoes you can’t really walk in, but are perfect for drinks in the lobby of the hotel. And, of course, ALWAYS leave room for spur of the moment purchases."

We always end with your Style Theme Song...what is it?
"That would depend on the day. Maybe I could just put my iPod on shuffle and see where it lands.  Or “Feelin’ Groovy.'"
