2015 was a good year for small spaces. We should know — we publish a lot of them. But it wasn't all smooth sailing: there were more than a few trends that, aided by social media, spun wildly out of control.

So how did those that stood out really personalize their live-and-work spaces? Our favorite homes and studios this year tell a varied story: From family heirlooms to thrift store finds, custom designs to Ikea hacks, each of these tours spotlights the unique rather than the ubiquitous — though there are plenty of pinnable plants within.
