Model Makeovers (& Makeunders) You Need To See To Believe

It's that time of year again: Fashion Week! While we here at R29 have been preparing for the big week by organizing our calendars, drinking green juices, working ahead so we can prepare for days of fashion-show madness, and huddling under our desks in anxiety, the stars of the shows — the models — have also been quite busy...at the hair salon!

Yes, it seems that Fashion Week is the perfect time to debut brand-new looks, since many models will be endlessly snapped on the runway, by iPhones backstage, and even as they stomp the streets of New York. This is the most fashionable way to debut a new 'do, isn't it?

We caught up with Aura Friedman and Roxie Darling, two colorists who were responsible for some of NYFW's biggest hair overhauls — and even a couple of tiny little tweaks that somehow made all the difference. Click through to see the transformations.

Sita Abellán
Sita is an international model signed to Wilhelmina — who also enjoys that much-coveted "cool girl" reputation (hence that Marilyn Manson-esque contact lens). Naturally, she was Aura's dream: "Sita told me I could do whatever I wanted," Aura says with a laugh.

Obviously, that meant PURPLE: "She's a DJ, too, so I checked out her Instagram and got a vibe for what she does — and that's when I came up with this idea of having two different colors in the hair," Aura explains. "She has a very geometric bob, so I wanted to play off of that shape and do a colorblock with the hair. Basically, I put a veil of purple over a veil of pinky-coral tones."

This gives the style chameleon even more versatility: "When she pulls her hair back, she will basically have pink hair," Aura says. "We had such a great, fun time. It's a cool color."

Phillipa Steele
When she saw the gorgeous Phillipa of Trump Models, who hails from Fiji, Aura felt like her current color didn't match her true beauty: "The blonde was distracting from her gorgeous face," she says. "It was pretty and beachy, right? But, it wasn't quite there."

"I wanted to give her a super-rich color that would enhance her light eyes and bring out her amazing bone structure, which is what darker colors can really do," Aura says. "I went with a dark, rich brown, but kept some pieces out, and toned them with a warmer, golden brown for dimension." This combo of warm and cool hues lets her complexion's golden undertones shine brighter, while emphasizing her piercing, icy gaze, explains Aura.

Lily Dale
When Lily arrived at Hairstory, a small, intimate establishment that's home to the cult Purely Perfect line, she was a platinum blonde with a bob — something that felt very in-demand in 2014.

To update her hair for the new year, Roxie and stylist Wes Sharpton worked their magic, bestowing Lily with a makeunder. "I took her from a very California platinum to a more mature, rich blonde," Roxie says. "I think it's more adult and sophisticated with the added dimension." She also added clever shading at the roots, so the hair has just the right effortlessly edgy vibe. Naturally, the cut followed this new aesthetic: "I wanted it to look a bit more considered, but still lived-in," Wes explains.

Zlata Semenko
Zlata, of Muse, was another model who was about to undergo a little bit of platinum rehab via a hair-color makeunder: "When she came to see me, her roots had an orange tone," Aura says. "And, I think that the super-light blonde, while very pretty, was taking away from the color in her face and lips."

"I neutralized the brassiness at the roots, and took her to a really beautiful golden blonde," Aura says. "I really see a striking difference in the skin tone — her amazing blue eyes pop way more thanks to the depth of the lowlights, and her skin looks richer and healthier."

Daiane Conterato
Daiane of The Society is known for her razor-sharp features, which are beautifully accented by her gorgeous head of raven hair. "But, she wanted to change her look," Aura says. Naturally, she was up for something very different.

Enter: blonde. "I didn't want to go all the way platinum because she has very dark eyes and brows, so we settled on a warmer, golden blonde, which enhances her complexion. Then, I added depth to the roots to make it look more natural," says Aura.
