The temps are finally starting to warm up, which conjures up thoughts of sipping a refreshing cocktail in an alfresco setting. Sure, you can head to one of Chicago's amazing patios or rooftops, but don't dismiss the simple pleasure of mixing it up on your own turf.
While you may have that go-to sipper, think outside of the (wine) box with a tasty concoction made with a special touch: spirits from six of the city's top local distilleries. Thirsty for more? These cocktails come with easy-to-follow recipes. Go ahead, raise a glass to local love — and not needing a cab home.

Koval Spirits: La Nuit Blanche

3/4 oz Koval White Rye Whiskey
3/4 oz Koval Bierbrand
3/4 oz Dolin dry vermouth
1/4 oz Benedictine
Dash of Angostura bitters and Peychaud's

Stir spirits with ice, strain into cocktail glass, and garnish with a lemon twist.

North Shore Distillery: The Goliath

2 oz North Shore Distiller's Gin No. 11
1 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz simple syrup
1/4 oz Green Chartreuse
4 to 5 slices of cucumber

Combine in shaker, and shake hard, making sure to break up the cucumber thoroughly. Strain over one large ice cube in a double-rocks glass. Top with soda, and garnish with cucumber slices.

Few Spirits: Smokin' Mary at the Publican

2 cups tomato juice
1.25 tsp molasses
1/2 tsp chipotle pepper powder
1/2 tsp dark chili powder
1.25 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp celery seed
1/2 oz Worcestershire sauce
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/4 oz lime juice
1 tbs fresh grated horseradish
1.5 oz Few White Whiskey

Blend together then add the whiskey and a dash of Tabasco. Pour over ice and garnish with savory items such as pickles, bacon, etc.

Next Star Vodka: Wallace Rice

2 oz Next Star vodka
1 oz sake
3 oz of fresh lemonade
Muddled jalapeno peppers

Shake all of the ingredients and strain over ice. Top with soda water and a squirt of lime. Garnish with lime, lemon, and/or jalapeño peppers for a kick.

Real Russian: Night Scene

1 oz Real Russian vodka
1 oz Cocchi Americano
1 oz Snow Flake sake
.5 oz. Combier
A few dashes of orange bitters

Stir the ingredients and serve in a chilled martini glass. Garnish with orange disk.

Tailwinds Distilling Company: Velvet Mojito

1 ½ oz Taildragger white rum
½ oz Navan vanilla liquor
2 lime wedges
Mint leaves (generous amount)
¾ oz simple syrup

Shake all of the ingredients and serve over ice in a rocks glass. Garnish with mint leaves.
