A Fashion Editor Shows You Her Hood

Is it just us, or has the number of fashion writers in New York tripled faster than you can say “Céline Luggage tote?” In a town filled with so many well-spoken stunners, it’s a wonder when one of them manages to break from the pack, as Kerry Pieri’s done with her winning trifecta: writing chops, a fetching face — oh, and a magpie eye for style that’s equally obsessed with leather overalls and Gwyneth Paltrow in Great Expectations.
As senior digital editor at Harper’s Bazaar, Pieri sits at the helm of one of the fashion world’s daily must-reads, covering the runway shows and designer collabs du jour, along with her latest trend obsessions. And, far from giving off an icy, fashion-world hauteur, Pieri is happy to share all that insider intel — an inclination we were all too happy to tap into.

We tagged along with Pieri on a tour of her favorite Flatiron haunts and got the scoop on everything from how she broke into the fashion biz to must-have pieces from her favorite dream-shopping destination, NET-A-PORTER. Read on: Major trade secrets — including how to beat the Shake Shack line — are right this way.

First stop, Madison Square Park. And, first things first: Tell us how you landed your amazing job at Harper's Bazaar!

"I've always loved fashion and writing. I used to spend as much time dressing up as I would lying on our radiator — this was Buffalo in the wintertime! — reading books or writing short stories. I was a journalism major, but when I first moved to New York, I actually started in broadcast for fashion and lifestyle programming, like Full Frontal Fashion and Real Simple Television. I knew working in editorial was what I wanted to do and started freelancing a bit before taking a full-time job at StyleCaster. I was promoted to editorial director and stayed there for nearly two years before moving over to my role at Bazaar.com."

What do you most love about your job?

"I love how fresh it feels each day. Because I create market stories, cover breaking fashion news, and write in-depth features like designer profiles, I never, ever, get bored. Plus, I love looking at clothes, accessories, and shoes and supporting creative people — what could be better? I also love the ladies I work with; that makes all the difference."

You have so many peoples' dream job — does it feel that way day-to-day?

"It really is a dream place to work. Online fashion content suits me, because I love how fast and immediate it is, and I love the Bazaar voice and how beautiful the imagery is."

Speaking of beautiful imagery, how good is Pieri's Miu Miu clutch with vampy-red nails for fall?

Okay, now we're jealous — not least of all because you live in Flatiron and get to spend lots of time in Madison Square Park.
"It's basically my backyard! They recently opened up the lawn, and it's so perfect when it's nice out. My husband and I bring our SLVRBK mats and lay, read, and hang out."

Are you usually dressed to the nines when you visit?
"When you have the option to walk through a beautiful space in the middle of New York as opposed to just another concrete sidewalk, I say take it. I love using Madison Square Park as a thoroughfare, so although I wouldn't wear this ladylike look to lay on the grass on the weekend (cutoffs, a tank, and a head scarf are more my speed), it's perfect for a day at the office or a trip up to the museum."

Okay, brass tacks: Any locals-only tips on how to avoid the massive lines at Shake Shack?
"My rule of thumb is to only go in the winter or when it's raining and bring it back to the apartment. It's the only way to avoid those insane lines!"

We're all about Pieri's pro tip for instant fall style:

"A shearling coat can solve all sartorial issues. Put this navy blue Joseph coat over just about anything and suddenly you're expertly styled. It's super-warm, and I adore, adore, the color."

Tell us about this outfit — we love this Chloé skirt in an unexpected, springy color.
"I'm petite, but I find midi-skirts to be very flattering, especially when they hit your natural waist and you pair them with a great heel. And, this light mint shade is so beautiful and more versatile than you might expect."

Do you have any style idols you secretly imitate?
"Gwyneth in the 1990s was such a standout. I love her looks in Great Expectations — not that she's fallen off! Kate Moss is forever an inspiration, and Diane Kruger pushes boundaries in a very cool way."

Tell us a bit about your personal style. Is there a philosophy you live by?
"I have an inner conflict between classic American style and that insouciant French-girl look. So, I'd say my style is a mix of minimal and edgy with tailored pieces: think leather skirts or pants with fisherman knits or tailored blazers. I wear mainly black, white, navy, gray, and tan, and if I wear jewelry, it's sparing. And, I never wear flats — I'm 5'2". It's just the way it has to be!"

Tell us about your next stop, Idlewild Books. It's basically the go-to for bookworms with a case of wanderlust, right?

"Idlewild has that cozy-bookstore vibe down. I love to pick up travel guides here, and they're very creative, putting novels about a place right next to the guides. Why not read A Moveable Feast before you head off to Paris?"

We love following your take on trends at Bazaar.com. What are your current obsessions?

"The luxe sweatshirt is a piece that's very now, and J.W.Anderson currently has a stronghold on chic, easy pieces. I love this anchor-print sweatshirt — the bit of kitsch that the logo provides, and it doesn't hurt that it's crazy-comfortable."

Any tips to step up our weekend style?
"Go beyond the skinny jean! I love the idea of tossing on a skirt, boots, and sweatshirt for weekend browsing. It elevates the whole experience — and when you're shopping for travel books and great novels, it helps to feel like you fit the part of a jet-setter."

Favorite designers?

"I think Rosie Assoulin is doing really beautiful work, as well as Thomas Tait and Simone Rocha out of London and, of course, J.W.Anderson. I adore Katie Ermilio; she designed my wedding dress!"

And Chanel, of course — this tome's the perfect inspiration for Parisian arrondissement-exploring or just a rainy-day read.

No neighborhood's complete without a great coffee shop — what's your go-to spot?
"71 Irving Place Coffee & Tea Bar is a great weekend place to chill if you're not in the mood for a full brunch. It has a definite Parisian café vibe — which I embrace with an Isabel Marant sweater. Fall for me is all about a great knit, and all year-round is about navy for me, so this sweater has all my bases covered. The side vents are just a little sexy, which feels fun on a covered-up sweater."

Any tips for upping the ante on an easy weekend look?

"I like looking put-together but not fussy. These Repossi gold ear cuffs definitely up the level of sophistication. I see no good reason to ever run out for coffee in sweats, unless it's on your way back from a great yoga session!"

We love this left-field look for a night out at ABC Kitchen.

"I love it, because it's dressed up but still a little edgy. A girl in jeans and a girl in a gown can be eating at the same restaurant at the same time with no judgements, so it's really up to you to dress how you feel. I think a little Alexander Wang white dress is a year-round piece, just style it with booties and a bomber for the cooler months."

"As difficult as New York can be, there's no place else in the world where everything is so accessible. Amazing food, art and culture, fashion, interesting people, theater (no musicals, please!) are all at your fingertips. Along with Madison Square Park and Gramercy Park, I think this area is such a gem in the city. I'd like to try to keep it a secret, but I think the word's out!"
