How To Wear Blue Lipstick

Blue is having a moment — it’s the unofficial color of spring 2014 (sorry Radiant Orchid) and has been spotted everywhere from nail-polish collections to the models’ hair on the runway at NYFW. But, such a fun shade deserves the spotlight — on your lips. It's true the shade can easily look costume-ish — after all, no one wants to look like they've been caught making out with a Smurf.
However, Rihanna has been spotted wearing shades of blue on the red carpet in such a sophisticated manner that reminds us all we shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss the color. Plus, there are hidden benefits to wearing blue lipstick: It makes your teeth appear whiter and can help tone down yellow in the skin to counteract sallowness, giving you an overall more youthful appearance.

Line Your Lips
With a color as bright as blue, you need to commit. Even if you don't use lipliner with any other shade in your repertoire, you'll really want to use it with blue lipstick. To avoid that "I've been drinking slurpees all day" look, try OCC's Cosmetic Colour Pencil in Anti-Feathered, a clear primer pencil you can use on and around your lips to prevent feathering and bleeding, or Pool Boy, a true aquatic blue. You can also use violet toned or nude liners — it really depends on what you want the end effect to be.

Pick The Right Shade Of Blue
As with any color of lipstick, you'll need to find the right shade for your skin tone. Cooler blues with violet undertones look best on warmer shades of skin. If you want to go electric blue, remember: The lighter your skin, the bigger the pop of color. Finally, a deep, smoky navy shade tends to look universally flattering on everyone.

Make Bronzer Your Friend
The last thing you want people to think is that your lips look blue because you're literally freezing your face off. Warm up your skin with a bronzer, and ditch the rosy cheeks as well — a peach blush works best to make you look cozy.

Go Easy On The Rest Of Your Makeup
With blue lips, you're going to stand out. Keep the rest of your makeup simple and fresh — think lots of mascara paired with nude shimmery shadows or a black, winged liner. Pairing a blue, violet, or teal liner can easily give the overall effect of your makeup a muddy look.

Play With Effects
Kaye Tuckerman, pro artist for Inglot Cosmetics, suggests layering different lip glosses over your blue for everything from holographic effects or to add more highlights and depth to your lipstick. "Highlighting the blue with coral pink hues or holographic gloss really makes the blue pop for a fun party look."

Ease Yourself In
Not ready to try blue lipstick? Pick up a tube anyway. Tuckerman notes that if you do have a great red lipstick you love or even a shade of red that doesn't look quite right on you, you can layer a blue over it to add some depth and dimension for an alternate look. Mixing blue with a warm lipstick turns the shade cool, so you can easily double your lipstick wardrobe with one shade.
