Your looks are always shot from the waist down, hence the name View From The Topp. How did you come up with that unique angle (pun intended)?
"I was never comfortable with the idea of a traditional outfit-of-the-day blog. I didn't want it to be about me. The view I give people is the view they see every day. People can see themselves in my shoes, imagine themselves in my outfit. Because I love photography, my goal is to make a beautiful image and to inspire other people."
Large brim hat, Kate's own. For a similar style, try Levi's Large Brim Hat, $38, available at Levi's.
What inspired you to start your own blog?
"I worked for two stylists who had been around for a while — they kept encouraging me to start a blog. I, of course, kept brushing it off. One day, I put an outfit photo on Instagram and within a few days, it had gone viral. I felt like I owed it to myself to see where things went, and View From The Topp evolved from that."
We know your love for fashion started early. What initially piqued your interest?
"From as early as I can remember, my dad would take my sister and me shopping. He's always dressed very simply — chic and understated — but he taught us not to be afraid to be different. He bought us vintage motorcycle jackets and three-piece suits. What 6-year-old girl has that? I went through a phase when I wore nothing but bell bottoms and hot pants, and he taught me about that. He loved to educate us about the fashion he experienced growing up. My mom would reprimand him, but that never stopped him."
How come? Was your mom (gasp) not into fashion?
"My mom's sense of style was just much lower maintenance. She never shared my dad's need to constantly be shopping. She passed away a few years ago, and looking back at old pictures of her, I realize I was so inspired by the simplicity of her wardrobe. I found a picture of her from years and years ago, and she's wearing Levi's® and a bodysuit. That's something that looks totally on point right now. That's totally representative of her approach to style."
Simplicity is a common theme in your outfits. How do you find those classic pieces?
"I either find and repurpose old clothes or shop at vintage stores. This hat I'm wearing was my grandfather's. He passed away a few weeks ago, and I found this in his beach house. I wear it all the time now. He was 85, and the hat looked great on him. It works for me, too. Those are the kinds of pieces I like."
