How To Layer To Perfection? Our Expert Has The Trick

A great styling technique to transition your look from summer to fall is easy layering. If done correctly, using similar color palettes, fabrics, textures, and silhouettes as your guide, you can add dimension and warmth to an otherwise basic outfit—minus any extra bulk. Here are a few of the ways to get the effect just right.
Choose Lightweight Fabrics. Pairing wool with multiple layers is extra tricky, and unless you're in a snow storm, you're likely to end up overheating. Fabrics like cotton, cashmere, and linen are super adaptable and often light and breathable, making them an easy layering option.

Go Monochromatic. Play with various shades, fabrics, and detailing within one color palette. Keeping the outfit monochromatic can help guarantee your end result will be cohesive and not too off-the-wall. For example: Shirley is wearing a sky-blue cotton Gap button-down, navy velvet Yves Saint Laurent vest, and a beaded cardigan with cobalt sequin detailing on the shoulders.
Layer Your Accessories. Stack on necklaces, bracelets, rings (or like me, all of the above). This look can be pulled off any season, plus jewelry always fits and won't add unflattering bulk to your shape. Pair your bold statement jewelry with classic dresses, sweaters, or even a simple T-shirt. For example: Alex wears a mixture of cuffs, bangles, bracelets, and necklaces with a super-soft gray Society of Les long-sleeved shirt, neon denim shorts, and cognac booties.
Some of my favorite go-to layering pieces are my Bedford Street Laundry navy suede jacket, Theory black classic blazer, Forever 21 faux-leather motorcycle jacket, and, of course, vintage rhinestone necklaces.
