It's the holiday season, which means it's time for an avalanche of social events. Gift exchanges, family gatherings, ugly-sweater parties — it's enough to make your head spin. But, before you grab a carton of eggnog and hide out under your covers until Jan. 1, consider this advice from Elizabeth Taylor: "Put on some lipstick, and pull yourself together."
With that in mind, we've created your holiday makeup playbook. These seven looks will get you through any and every party you may get invited to — even that post-Christmas wedding. There are shimmery shadows, bright lip colors, and bold brows galore. And, you'll want to wear them long after the snow has melted.

The Ugly-Sweater Party

When it comes to this holiday mainstay, it's time to pull out all the stops. You're already wearing a tree sweater rigged with enough batteries to light up the Empire State Building — why not turn it up to 11 with your makeup?

Green shadow with red lips is an obvious choice, but you could even pair the ruby shade with a slick silver. Whichever colors you choose, just go bold. No excuses. Play like a champion. In it to win it.

The Casual Gift Exchange

Just because you're sitting there swilling cheap wine at your friend's apartment doesn't mean your makeup has to be snoozeville. But, this also isn't the time to bust out your most dramatic cat-eye.

Instead, try a light sweeping of rosy shadow across your lids with some brushed-up brows. A touch of gloss and contouring, and you're gorgeous without overdoing it. Now, let's just hope Jessica doesn't drop the ball and gift you something totally lame. Dammit, Jessica.

Meeting Your S.O.'s Family

You want to make a good impression, but you also want to be yourself. And, if yourself is a makeup lover, then wear that makeup with pride.

Opt for a light, peachy tone across your lids, and skip the eyeliner. Tint your lashes with one coat of mascara. Lastly, swap out your bold lipstick for a low-maintenance stain. Just tap your favorite pigment into the center of your lips with your finger, and blend it out. Repeat after us: "Mothers love me."

The Family Party

Here's the issue with the family party: You want to look your best, but you also run the risk of your grandmother asking, "What's the deal with that crazy lipstick?"

So, split the difference. Opt for a shimmery silver shadow, and then keep the rest of your face simple. A touch of contouring and a clear balm on the lips will keep your makeup grounded. Maybe, everyone will be so taken that they'll quit asking you awkward questions about your personal life. A girl can dream, can't she?

The Unexpected High School Reunion

It's the holiday season, so everyone from your high school is flooding back to their family homes. This means any jaunt out to the local bar quickly turns into the possibility for disaster: the impromptu high school reunion. (Which, TBH, sounds a bit like the name of a horror film.)

So, be prepared. Dab some gilded shadow onto the center of your lids, and swipe a deep lipstick across your pout. It'll be equal parts sexy and trendy, which is the perfect storm of awesomeness.

The Work Holiday Party

The one commandment of the work party: Thou shalt not piss off HR. This goes for your makeup, and it goes doubly for the "smart decision" to hook up with your coworker. Yes, it's a party, but it's also an office one and you need everyone there to think you're professional, so you can continue killing it at your job.

We know your makeup choices have nothing to do with your on-the-job competency, but sadly most corporate offices haven't gotten that memo. But, that doesn't mean you can't have a little fun. Add a swipe of gold liquid liner right above your cat-eye. It will be high-impact without going over-the-top.

The Post-Holiday Wedding

We've all been to one. We may not love them, but look on the bright side: They're another opportunity to test-drive those shimmery holiday eyeshadows.

Pull out your gilded pigment and swipe it across your lids. Then, smudge on some kohl liner, and finish with glossy, ruby-red lips. The effect will be elegant, classy, and make you look like you totally want to be there, instead of curled up on your couch streaming Friends.
