Follicle Foils! A Rash Of Human Hair Thefts Plague Shopowners

The hot heists these days don't involve jewels, bags of money, or gold ingots—rather, burglars are targeting salons to get their mitts on human hair that's used for hair extensions. These pricy locks cost hundreds of dollars per package (at least two packages are necessary for a complete head of hair). The hair is then sold on the Internet or on the street. A typical theft can net in the upper five digits, with one Houston shopowner losing $150,000 in merchandise, without their cash registers, electronics, or other valuables even being touched. Hair today, gone tomorrow—lock up those locks! (NYT)
