Trend Forecasting: Dreamy Opals Are Having A Moment In The Sun

At last night's Met Gala, we thought we spied one redeeming thing about January Jones' comic book look — an opulent opal necklace. Ready to give her at least a few kudos, we were sorely disappointed upon closer inspection, to find that the jewel was a much less exciting turquoise choker. Alas, red carpet strutters can't win 'em all.

Regardless, trippy translucent opals have been popping up everywhere, of late: From stars whose style really shines (Busy Phillips rocked eerie earrings to the Oscars), to the latest Cartier catalogue — and even a bride we bowed down to last weekend who opted out of diamonds for an other-worldly engagement band — these babies are really making an impact.

The kaleidoscopic and cool stone looks like it landed from outerspace, but did you know that most originate in Australia? Or that they have both a rep for providing good luck and supernatural powers? Sure, they don't come cheap, but we're betting they're the next big, perhaps huge, thing. So, check out this gallery of multi-colored, and thoroughly modern baubles, and hop on the bandwagon!

We Dare You To Try These Challenging Spring Shoe Trends

It's not all pretty pumps and strappy sandals lining the shoe racks this spring (although, we love those, too). There are plenty of oddball, are-they-awesome-or-are-they-hideous shoes out there that we might require a couple of tequila shots before you can leave the house in them, but we think you're up to the challenge.

And who knows — your early adoption might just make you a renegade to be reckoned with, in your fashion circle...and just think of how good it'll feel next season, when everyone is wearing the shoes you were donning just six months prior. We double-dog dare you to step up to these spring shoe trends. Challenge accepted?

Something To Share With The Boyfriend: Dockers' Alpha Khaki

Alpha Khaki When it comes to heritage brands, S.F.-based Dockers have been in the duds-making game for decades. Since launching in 1986, the mostly men-centric label has crafted simple staples synonymous with California casual. Once reserved for office wear, the Levi's-owned label is seriously shifting the khaki-laden line toward a cooler crowd. And, after getting a sneak peek at the fall '12 line last night, we like what we see!

In the company's Jackson Square showroom, we were pleasantly surprised to see an array of cool new styles. Our favorite of the bunch is the Alpha Khaki, which is a straight-leg khaki meets jeans mashup that comes in a bevy of interesting hues for the cool-weather season, from rich burgundy to inky turquoise that looks like the deepest Pacific waters.

Bonus: Thanks to the low rise, slim tapered fit., the bottoms are actually kind of unisex! And we've certainly got our eye on the robin's egg blue versions... Boyfriend jeans, welcome back!

Splash Course: Tune Into PRISM’s Colorful Video Lookbook

DREAMGIRLS: Prism S/S '12 from Kristin Eddington on Vimeo.

Remember how R-rated the red carpet got last week when Zefron’s golden ticket went rogue, and sparked a collective gasp at The Lorax premiere? Of course you do! Who forgets a Trojan horse in the room? Well, leave it to us to conduct further research of the event in question.

After careful study of archival footage, we noticed Zac covertly donned a pair of sick specs after his foiled foul. Turns out, London-based brand PRISM supplied the Paris Zebra Horn sunglasses that helped the blushing babe save face in front of the rabid photogs. We love it when accessories instantly respond to a red carpet SOS! Join us in our PRISM praise by peeping their just-released video for the spring/summer '12 collection with art direction by Kristin Eddington. It’s a stop-motion splish-splash of structured sunnies and minimalist swimwear — exactly the 2D in PG we needed. Bring the kids!

Rad Or Bad: Vent Here About Draping Jackets Over Shoulders

Never mind neon, those Prada racecar shoes, or even red lips... the thing that seems most effective in attracting the lenses of street-style photographers is wearing your jacket slung over both shoulders. When we first saw this trend, it told a pretty definite story — a harried editor rushing between shows who doesn't even have time to put her coat on all the way... it's the closest Fashion Week street style gets to poetry.

But after seeing it time and time again, the look is starting to feel affected instead of irreverent. Having once tried it ourselves, we can say it is definitely not an "effortless" styling trick — there's an uncomfortable balancing act that goes on with your shoulders, not to mention a draft that really renders the coat useless. But...it does get bonus points for looking like a superhero cape! So, would you rather give this styling trick the cold shoulder, or are you willing to take out your arms and let those sleeves flop freely? Discuss.

12 Perfect Spring Satchels To Start Wearing Now

Our extremely scientific studies have shown that colder weather brings out bigger carryalls. But as we look toward March, we not only shed layers but also excess baggage (can we talk about yesterday?!). This means investing in some smart and bright satchels you can sport all season long. We found 12 subjects that we're already swooning over, and we're pretty sure all of them will pass the test. Sure, there are variables: color, shape, material, but the end result is a must-have spring accessory that you can start rocking like…now. But, if you wanna ship us any product samples, we'll be happy to do some additional fieldwork for you.

8 Must-Buy Spring '12 Trends From An S.F. Expert

With the fall '12 shows just ending in New York (and heating up across the pond), we know it's sometimes hard to keep your mind planted firmly in the here and now (and by that, we mean winter '12). Well, how about we meet you halfway, and daydream a little bit about what will be stuffing our closets come spring, which is actually just around the corner.

We've tapped majorly fashion-forward shop owner Mira Pickett, of Mission shop Mira Mira to help us start thinking ahead. Beloved for introducing little-known labels to San Francisco (Gat Rimon, TBA, My Pet Square, Laugh Cry Repeat, etc.), Mira's something of an expert at spotting the runway's must-have looks well before they hit the masses. So, clearly, who better to dish on the top eight trends to invest in this spring? Get out your organizer, take notes, and plan your budget accordingly.
