The Head-To-Toe Guide To V-Day Hotness
Let's put the BS aside for a second and just be frank: Valentine's Day is about looking H-O-T. To save you time and prepping agony (don’t pretend like you actually enjoy that bikini wax), we asked the beauty pros at the Paul Labrecque Salon & Spa in NYC to give us their ultimate get-ready guide for V-Day.
From how to create bedhead-worthy waves to an at-home mask that will make your skin glow like you’ve been gettin’ busy, here are six tips you need to follow, to make your honey weak in the knees.
Colorblocking: The Makeup Edition
Colorblocking is in full swing for spring — we've already shown you some of our fave ways to get in on the two-tone trend — but why let your clothes have all the fun? Layering bright shadows, liners, blushes, and lipsticks can result in a cool, colorful makeup look that's right on trend for the season.
Just like colorblocked clothes, there's myriad possibilites with your makeup as well, so we asked makeup artist Raychel Wade to break down four of our favorite ways to get graphic. "Colorblocking is so liberating because you get to throw all of those traditional 'rules' of makeup out the window and let your creative juices flow," says Wade. "But in order to make it wearable, since we aren't all prancing down a runway each day, try and use some restraint and balance." That means highlighting one feature, rather than your entire face, to avoid looking like you got sucker-punched by a clown.
We went a little crazy with our colors (what can we say, it's go bold or go home around here), so use these editorial looks as inspiration, not literal interpretations. Tone down the colors and the application to make these more wearable, or if you're feeling fierce, just go for it! Read on to see makeup colorblocking in action, and to get Raychel's tips on how to translate the trend to the real world.

A Makeup Pro Teaches Us The Dos and Don'ts Of Liquid Liner
We’ve all fallen victim to the raccoon-eyed look as a result of our experimenting with liquid eyeliner. It just looks so easy in the magazines, right? Well, it’s not. And there are definite dos and don’ts when it comes to the dramatic look. But this time, we’re leaving the advice to a local pro, Rocio de la Cruz. This celebrity-adored makeup artist shares her tricks of trade — which happen to include a tip on makeup remover, too. In case your hand slips, ya' know?
Why use liquid eyeliner?
“To emphasize the eyes in a dramatic way, and it makes the lashes appear fuller. It's not an everyday product unless it's done very subtly. But it does last longer than a regular pencil. It’s also great to wear over false lashes to cover that plastic rim.”
What should we look for when purchasing a great liquid liner?
“The most popular color is black. It comes in several shades and also with glitter. The latest formulations come in a cream/gel form (for those with a steady hand) and in a pen form (which is easier to control).”
What are your tips for applying?
“When using the traditional liquid liner, make sure the brush is very thin and go as close as you can to the lash line. Then, hold it sideways, don't put too much pressure on it, and let it slide. If the line is crooked, it can be corrected by dipping a very thin Q-tip on matte black eyeshadow. Use the Q-tip to smudge the eyeliner.”
How can we avoid the raccoon eyes?
“When doing your makeup, always do your eyes first. This way, you will be able to clean up any residue that falls under the eye with makeup remover. And make sure to apply concealer at the end!”

Pucker Up! Four Hot Lip Trends To Try Now
Unless you're bi-coastal, a perpetual spray-tanner, or just happen to have hit the good-genes jackpot (damn you!), chances are, in the winter, you're paler than usual. Instead of trying to fight nature, we think it best to embrace the look with a strong makeup P.O.V. The answer? Just the right lipstick. So, we've narrowed down the best hues of the season to four go-to color categories that anyone can pull off. Oh, and we've also snagged major makeup artist Paula Dorf to give us a paint-by-numbers breakdown. From warm-'n'-toasty neutrals to gothically purple tones, these trends let you pump up the glam and update your cold-weather look without breaking the bank. The best part about showing your lips some fun, colorful love is that it'll even make your all-black puffer coat look chic…well, maybe.

We say: We've been seeing this deep purple color popping up in the office and all over town, and when done right, it can be a total makeup home run. Don't shy away from the dramatic look — it just might be the "new you."
Paula's tips: "For this trend, I’d recommend a lip gloss for a sexy, dramatic look. The gloss will look healthy if you use a semi-transparent shade, rather than a traditional matte lipstick, which can make you look like you have bruised lips. The purple shade generally looks better with a paler skin tone (verses a summertime glow), but you’ll want to wear a little color on your cheeks in a medium brown or pink shade, and a nice, classic eye. It may be fun to really play up your lashes, but I’d avoid a deep, smoky eye – as that could make you look like a vampire."

You Asked, We Answer: How To Pick The Perfect Gel Eyeliner
We recently queried Twitter followers about their fashion and beauty conundrums, and got a batch of pressing questions in return — one of which is this beauty dilemma:
"I need a black gel liner that won't bleed onto my upper eyelid by the end of the work day!"
To get the best possible intel, we checked in with our senior beauty editor, then hit the interwebs to find some top-notch eyeliner options. The result? Two quick-and-easy rules to follow for perfect liner, and the products you'll need to pull it off. 1. First things first — a primer can be your best friend! It cuts down on greasiness and keeps the liner from transferring to your upper lids. We're fans of Bare Escentuals' range of lid primers, including the original Prime Time Eyelid Primer. Apply it lightly before eyeshadow to keep color (and ultimately, liner) in place.
2. Gel liners that come in pots can be tricky, especially if your eyelids tend to get shiny by the end of the day. Also, keep in mind that pot liners require you to clean your brush after every application, which isn't ideal if you like to keep your makeup routine short and sweet. Try a gel liner in pencil form, such as Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion, Zero, or Oil Slick, to streamline the process while still getting major impact.

Update Your Beauty Routine With These Tips From The Gee Beauty Trio

It’s a new year and we’re thinking about getting a little lift. No, not that kind of lift. We’re envisioning the kind that comes from the right beauty routine. When it comes to glowing skin, there’s no better resource in Miami than the trio behind Gee Beauty. So, we caught up with Miriam, Natalie, and Celene Gee, to soak up their advice on how to achieve that lit-from-within look. Read on for their thoughts on mud masks, mascara, and cold-weather maintenance. Yeah, we figured you might need a little help in that arena.
When your day consists of meetings and social gatherings, how do you keep your skin looking its best, on the go?
Natalie:With that kind of lifestyle, you always want to be camera-ready. First, I’d recommend investing in a really good mask — either a clarifying mask or some sort of volcanic mud mask. That's going to hydrate your skin even if you’re partying, drinking, eating a lot, and not sleeping much. Also, a really good serum is important. At Gee Beauty, we use Serum Repair from Dr. Sebagh, which leaves the skin feeling cool and hydrated, and always adds a glow. Lastly, you can’t forget the eyes. We love this eye contour patch from a company called Talika. The patches help to bring the collagen and skin fibers together so that your eyes don't look tired. Put the patches on 15 minutes before you go to a party and you’ll see how lifted and firm your eyes will look.
What makeup trick can help us stand out from the crowd at said party?
Miriam: I'd recommend fake lashes, or if you don’t have time for that, then just a coat of good mascara. Also, go for a winged look with eyeliner. That, plus good mascara will make your eyes pop.
Crazy Beauty Trick Worth Trying: Pepto-Bismol Blush
Here's a beauty trick we can honestly say we would never have come up with on our own: using Pepto-Bismol as blush. Pretty Gossip got all creative and used the digestive cure-all as a money-saving substitute for Benefit's Posie Tint Cheek Stain. Thanks to a healthy dose of red dyes number 22 and 28, smearing a little of the hot pink liquid on your cheeks results in a rosy pink color that's similar to the flush you would get with an expensive stain.
