Sure, the promise of chemical-free makeup is a fine idea. But, at the end of the day, we want products that work. And, can those two things ever live in harmony?
Enter: Desirae Cherman, our go-to celebrity makeup artist, whose past clients include Jaime King, Kendall Jenner, Anna Kendrick, Mindy Kaling, and, many, many more. Having seen Cherman whip out various organic products on photo shoots, we asked her to fill us in on the different levels of organic makeup, and the products that actually work for each level. Ahead, Cherman breaks down the three different categories of natural beauty products — and the best beauty buys for each.

Semi-Organic: "Brands like Tarte, Korres, and W3ll People are semi-organic because their products are free of most of the really bad chemicals that are in a lot of products [i.e. parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, synthetic fragrances, etc.]. But, these brands still use some non-organic ingredients in order to achieve things like high pigment, strong coverage, etc."

Semi-Organic: Tarte LipSurgence Power Pigment
"These are super-pigmented and stain your lip, which is amazing! Plus, they're still very moisturizing."

Tarte LipSurgence Power Pigment, $24, available at Sephora.

Semi-Organic: Korres Lip Butter
"These are extremely moisturizing. What's nice about these is that if you don't need a ton of color, these leave the perfect, subtle amount of pigment."

Mostly Organic: "These are the middle-line brands on the organic scale. The majority of the ingredients in their products are natural — meaning minerals, vitamins, etc. — but, all of the ingredients included are not necessarily organic."

Mostly Organic: Vapour Organic Beauty Atmosphere
"These are great if you're looking for medium coverage. They do require a bit of touch-up, but, the stick makes it super-easy to carry with you!"

Vapour Organic Beauty Atmosphere Luminous Foundation, $42, available at Beauty.com.

Mostly Organic: Lavera Mineral Eyeshadow Duo
"These shadows blend really nicely. A lot of times mineral makeup is chunky and tends to have a lot of fall-off. These give a really nice light wash of color."

Lavera Mineral Eyeshadow Duo, $19, available at Lavera.

Mostly Organic: Bite Beauty Matte Crème Lip Crayon
"These are insanely phenomenal! They're so, so pigmented. They're super-matte, and they do not budge. If you're going out at night and want a really vampy red lip, these are definitely what I would recommend using."

Bite Beauty Matte Crème Lip Crayon, $24, available at Sephora.

100% Organic: "These brands only use organic ingredients, meaning all of the ingredients have been made free of pesticides. Unfortunately, the majority of these brands do lack in strong pigments and high coverage. That said, I really think this market is massively changing, and I don't think we're far from finding ways to achieve wearability and strong pigments without using harmful chemicals."

100% Organic: Zuii Organic Flora Liquid Foundation
"A good medium coverage — definitely a bit more coverage than the Vapour [mentioned earlier], but you still will need to reapply."

Zuii Organic Flora Liquid Foundation, $44.95, available at Zuii Organic.
