Are Crop Tops Over? One Designer Certainly Hopes So

We'll have to wait until Monday to see Carolina Herrera's spring '14 collection in full, but the designer has already offered a spoiler of what item won't be worn down her runway. In the cover story of Haute Living magazine's August/September issue, Herrera lamented that New York street style just isn't what it used to be. And, according to her, crop tops are to blame.
The state of fashion is oft discussed leading up to NYFW, which officially begins on Thursday. Herrera's take on today's style? It's just not good. "If you look at the people walking around the streets of New York at this moment, it is horrendous! I have never seen people so badly dressed in my life! It's amazing the way they look! I don't know why. I don't know what's going on, but it's really, really bad."
Harsh words coming from a pillar of the fashion industry, for sure. And, she went on to take aim directly at the belly baring shirts we've seen so many of this summer: "When you are very young and you have a wonderful figure you can pull it off... but whenever I see this style, it’s usually on the wrong person." Ouch.
Of course, it's true that dressing for your specific frame is an easy way to look put together, but we're of the mind that no one should be excluded from a style she or he loves. Whether or not Herrera is flying solo on her crusade against what was arguably this summer's biggest trend — sorry Carolina, we're on Team Crop — will become apparent in just two days. Will the disapproval of one designer be enough to lengthen shirts once and for all? Likely, no. But, expect us to follow the crop beat closely this Fashion Month. (NY Post)
