Musical Muse: Rebel Violinist Caitlin Moe's Wild On-Stage Style

Anyone who thinks violinists belong in a stuffy concert hall has never met Caitlin Moe. The bubbly blonde brandishes her electric violin like a rock star as she performs with the likes of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and hot NYC DJ Mia Moretti—all while pulling out seriously back-bending moves in leather, lace, and short hems that would make Beethoven blush. We recently caught up with this eclectic rule-breaker to find out who influences her signature style, her secrets for a flawless face, and some advice all would-be violinists (or anyone wanting to make it hard) should keep in mind. Hint: don't listen to your teachers!

You're well known for your spectacular on-stage style. What's your priority when dressing for a performance? Comfort? Style?
"A little bit of both. I tend to move around a great deal when performing, so I have to make sure it won't fall off or make me fall over ... cause, well, it happens! I also don't like to play with jewelry on, so you won't normally see me decked out in accessories."

Who are your greatest style influences?
"I grew up going to the orchestra and seeing classical concerts and remember as a little girl admiring all the women's fashion...there was something so timeless that I loved about how women at those concerts dressed both on and off stage. Strong, female artists also have an influence on me: Stevie Nicks, Robyn, The Supremes, Bjork, Patti Smith, Florence Welch, Lykke Li."

Is there a big difference between your on-stage style and your personal style?
"Not at all. Both are always changing and depend on my current mood. Honey, I'm a Sagittarius!"

Any tips for budding violinists out there?
"'The chief of object of education is not to learn things but to unlearn things.' - G. K. Chesterton. Classical music requires so much discipline and training, and when it has been drilled into you for hours upon hours every single day for 15+ years, it's hard to let go of that training and experiment."

Outside, Caitlin wears an Opening Ceremony top, Urban Outfitters bra, H&M skirt, and Jeffrey Campbell shoes.

You've already worked with the likes of Mia Moretti and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. What cool collab can we expect from you next?
"I've been very fortunate to record violin on some incredible records for artists I really admire: Lady Gaga's "Americano" and Low's "Especially Me" and "You See Everything." I also recently recorded violin on a couple tracks on Sam Sparro's new record as well as a stripped down EP with Michael Grubbs from Wakey!Wakey! (both set for release later in the year). I'm also in the midst of scoring my friend's film—which I really, really hope to do more of! AND! Mia Moretti & I will be releasing our first single "So Beautiful" at the end of this month!"
