How To Really Shop Your Bumble Salon Shelves

Let’s face it: The whole effortless, model-off-duty hair thing takes, well, effort. Typically, our natural bedhead is less "artfully disheveled" and more matted on one side, full-on lion’s mane on the other. So, when we want to fake the not-trying-too-hard look, we usually rely on a Bumble and Bumble product to get us there. A spritz here, a scrunch there, and we're good to go.

But Bumble is so much more than Surf Spray and Sumo Wax. While those are the staples that elevated the brand to cult status, it's earned downtown street cred over the years as well, developing products that help us achieve edgy styles as well as tousled, beachy ones.

We talked to the brand to find out what the current best sellers are in its NYC salons, and broke down what you can do with each product — as well as why you might need it.

Surf Foam Spray Blow Dry
What: The latest extension of the Surf line hit salons in mid-March (and is now available online, too). Spotted everywhere backstage during the fall 2016 NYFW season, Surf Foam Spray Blow Dry is part mousse and part salt spray to give you perfect surfer-chick texture.

How To Use: The frothy foam sprays on white, so you can see where to apply it — distribute evenly throughout damp hair, and the mix of salt and coconut water helps to create texture and lift. Then, add the heat of your blowdryer — if you use your hands you’ll have a more windswept, beachy style, but if you use your brush you’ll still get a matte, textured result.

Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Shampoo & Conditioner
What: This sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner combo is infused with a blend of six lightweight oils (hence the name) to help soften and protect dry, coarse, and damaged hair.

How To Use: If you fall into one of the above categories, use this shampoo daily, rinsing thoroughly. Follow with the conditioner, but let the conditioner sit on your hair for a minute or two before washing it out.

Dryspun Finish
What: If you have fine hair, you need this dry texture spray. Its purpose is to add fullness to your strands as it creates a cool, matte texture (for those who don’t want an overly shiny blowout).

How To Use: Spray it on dry hair after you’ve finished heat-styling it, focusing on the ends. Make sure to hold the bottle about 10 inches from your head (just like you would with dry shampoo), and spray it where you want more volume and texture.

Bumble and Bumble Dryspun Finish, $31, available at Bumble and Bumble.

Surf Infusion
What: While the cult-classic Surf Spray will always have a place in our hearts, the oil-infused Surf Infusion has actually taken its place in our beauty cabinets. A mix of tropical oils and sea salts, Surf Infusion is ideal for anyone who is looking for fresh-from-the-ocean texture, but without the dry finish.

How To Use: Shake the bottle well to blend the salt-and-oil formula. Spray evenly through strands (damp or dry), focusing on the ends.

Bumble and Bumble Surf Infusion, $29, available at Bumble and Bumble.

Sumotech
What: If you’re looking for a product to add that perfect piecey-ness to your textured cut, Sumotech is what you need. This hybrid of wax, paste, and crème is the perfect molding compound for short, textured cuts.

How To Use: On dry (or slightly damp) hair, use a dime-size amount and work your fingers through to create piecey-ness and texture. Add more if needed, but a little goes a long way.

Bumble and Bumble Sumotech, $29, available at Bumble and Bumble.

Don’t Blow It
What: This product gives you that lived-in look in mere minutes. With a combination of light polymers and plant-based conditioners, the weightless formula adds lift and smoothness, without dragging things down. Plus, you can simply apply it, and let your hair air-dry — it’s that easy.

How To Use: Don’t Blow It works best on fine or medium textures with a bit of natural wave; the product just enhances what is already there. Simply work into towel-dried hair by twisting it through, and let your mane air-dry.

Bumble and Bumble Don’t Blow It, $31, available at Bumble and Bumble.
