Though always an incubator for new music from the beginnings of hip-hop to the birth of punk, Brooklyn has solidified itself as arguably the most vibrant music scene on the planet over the past decade. The borough, which once drew musicians across the East River with cheap rent and studio space, has persisted as a mecca for aspiring acts of all stripes — even as low overhead has given way to luxury condos and pushed artists from Williamsburg to Bushwick, Bed-Stuy, and beyond. Still, now more than ever, a move from San Francisco, Minneapolis, or Portland is a way for an act to find larger audiences and like-minded collaborators. (It's almost harder to find a band that doesn't hail from Kings County than one that does.) To show the breadth of talent the borough has to offer, we rounded up just a few of our favorite Brooklyn-based bands. While some of these acts didn't begin in BK (and still others have moved on), these artists remain a vital a part of the borough's ever-expanding musical landscape.
