Beauty Combinations That Always Look Good

Some solo beauty statements are timeless — a crisp red lip, a glossy head of curls, a strike of liquid liner. Put a few of these together though, and you've got iconic combinations with some real next-level swagger. Think cat eyes and red lips, bronzed skin and beachy waves, or smokey eyes and nude gloss. Each of the aforementioned duos have been flawlessly executed by just about every leading lady since makeup has been a thing, starting with Elizabeth Taylor and right on through to Gigi Hadid. Ahead, we've gathered our favorite beauty combos on — who else? — our favorite celebrities. The hopes is that they'll serve as major inspiration for you on New Year's Eve — and the following 365, too. Check 'em all out in the slides ahead.

Monochrome Mania
If you ask us, monochrome will be the leading beauty trend for 2017. "I've always loved matching lips and cheeks. Being able to tie colors into your makeup makes it look more complete," celeb makeup artist Patrick Ta told us. Monochrome makeup can take on any color, from brown to pink but we're espeically feeling this tangerine look on Olivia Munn, who took it one step further with an orange crush gown.

Gently tap this creamsicle-colored blush along your lips and cheeks to mirror Munn's aesthetic. If you want more color though, swipe on a matching lipstick like this one from NYX Cosmetics.

Gilded Glory
There's something about the shades gold and red that go insanely well together. They're the colors of the Gryffindor house, Chinese New Year, heck, even the San Francisco '49ers. In the beautysphere, gilded lids and red lips have been a Hollywood staple for decades — and as Gigi well knows, they still are to this day.

Our favorite way to wear it? A subtle wash of gold on the lids, lashings of mascara, and a bold, matte red lippie. Bonus points if you pair it with a super-sleek chignon à la Gigi Hadid.

Color Play
Most of us have been told that if you're wearing color on your lips, it may not be wise to go bold on the eyes, too. We've seen countless cases of contrasting colors looking bomb on the face, though. So we say, go for it. Take Lupita Nyong'o's playful look. Blue on her eyes and and red on her lips play nicely because the subtle iterations make the pairing super-wearable.

The key to Nyong'o's look? A sheer of color instead of an opaque red finish. This tinted lip balm from Burt's Bees offers just the right amount of crimson tint while hydrating and soothing the lips.

Feline Flick
Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Alexa Chung, Adele — dozens of powerful women have owned cat-eyes and red lips in their day. For many, it's even a signature.

The key to this look is an A+ liquid liner. This one by Kat Von D is pigmented, long-lasting, and has a super-precise brush tip which makes it easy to achieve clean wings. Once your cat-eye is set, swipe on a layer of your favorite red and head out the door to take over the universe. (Or go to dinner. You know, whatever.)

Clean Lines
A sharp graphic eye and slicked back hair? If this look doesn't scream "cool girl," we don't know what does. Pairing the duo with a pink, embroidered dress like model Natasha Poly is a great way to soften things up, too.

After tracing on your graphic eye with your favorite liquid liner, scoop a dollop of hair pomade into the palms of your hands. Warm up the product between your fingers and rake through your roots, molding and shaping your hair as you go.

Ouai Matte Pomade, $24, available at Ouai.

Here's a classic combination that will never go out of style: smokey eyes and a nude lip. The neutral color on your mouth will let your bedroom eyes come hither.

Barely-There Bold
Sometimes the best way to rock a statement lip is to do just that...rock it. By that we mean nixing the bevy of other makeup items you usually slather on your face, thus allowing your natural skin to shine on through. The result is a fresh, clean look with a bright pop.

Feel free to skip base makeup all together. If that makes you feel too naked, reach for a creamy concealer rather than a full-coverage layer of foundation. This one by eco-chic brand, W3ll People, has a skin-like finish that never looks cakey.

W3ll People Bio Correct Multi-Action Concealer, $22.99, available at Target.

Bronzed & Beachy
No matter the season, the fresh-off-the-beach look is always hot, hot, hot. It's also insanely easy to achieve — even in the dead of winter. You just need the right products to get you there. (And um, a plane ticket.)

Generously dust your favorite bronzer along your forehead, nose, and cheeks — anywhere the sun would naturally hit your face — for an instantly glowy complexion. Finish it off by throwing a few loose waves into your hair. This curling wand, aptly named the Beachwaver, is beloved by numerous editors and is even used on Victoria Secret models to create bombshell waves.

The Beachwaver S.75 Curling Iron, $129, available at Ulta Beauty.
