This Celeb Lipstick Trend Is Not For The Faint Of Heart

Most of us use the adage "black goes with everything" when talking about clothing because, well, it does. But slap an onyx hue onto your lips and all of a sudden you're deemed "scary," "daring," or "unapproachable." Well, we're here to prove the haters wrong. In fact, if you ask us, the same age-old fashion adage applies to makeup.

"I love matte black lipstick, such a bold and arrogant shade, [it] frames every word that leaves my mouth," says Lydia Pang, daily black lipstick-wearer and creative director at Refinery29. "It underlines everything I say. Caps lock, full stop, bolded — it pronounces on my behalf."

For those used to sporting bright reds and pinks, it's may feel like a leap to purchase your first tube of black. But trust us when we say that the lipstick shade is as flattering as it is edgy — just ask all the celebs who've been donning the shade IRL and on the red carpet lately.

Don't believe us? We've rounded up seven examples in the slides ahead.

Joan Smalls

Smalls kept things simple with this all-black ensemble — complete with an inky pout. "Less is more," makeup artist James Vincent says. Read: Make your black lipstick the focal point of your look by keeping your skin natural and eyes soft, he told Refinery29.
Make Up For Ever's offering has a slight satin sheen that keeps the lips from looking too flat.

Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense in Satin Black, $20.00, available at Sephora.
Katy Perry

Sure, Perry's Met Gala look may not be all that wearable, but you have to admit her black lipstick pulls her entire Tamagotchi-clad outfit together.
As a celebrity ambassador for CoverGirl, Perry created her own matte black lipstick called Perry Panther. Since the shade is so creamy, we suggest applying it with a lip brush for crisp lines — then use a blotting paper to make it super matte, if that's your thing.

CoverGirl Katy Kat Matte Lipstick in Perry Panther, $6.94, available at Walmart.
Rihanna

You already know that the queen of bold makeup can rock any lipstick color, whether it's green, blue, or black. She paired the latter with golden eyeshadow and an itty bitty cat-eye — and we're so here for it.
Unlike many onyx lipsticks — which can require building and layering — this option offers full-coverage pigment in just one swipe.

MAC Liptensity Lipstick in Stallion, $21, available at MAC.
Gigi Hadid

Feeling intimidated by pitch black? Make like Gigi Hadid and opt for midnight blue instead: It's soft and unexpected, but just as impactful.
"This color screams attention," says celebrity makeup artist Ermahn Ospina. "No need to fight it. The more discreet the rest of your makeup is, the better." This velvety lipstick may go on matte, but it never feels dry, thanks to the castor seed oil and shea butter in the formula.

Ardency Inn Modster Long Play Supercharged Lip Color in Black is Blue, $25, available at Ardency Inn.
Beyoncé

A layer of black lipstick is the perfect topper to Bey's all-black ensemble.
Pair matte black lipstick with radiant skin for a cool, textural contrast.

ColourPop Bull Chic, $5, available at ColourPop.
Kylie Jenner

Like Rihanna, Kylie Jenner has been known to experiment with a rainbow of lipstick colors. We're partial to this true black shade on the reality-star-turned-beauty-entrepreneur.
This intensely-pigmented liquid lipstick might not have Jenner’s name on it (à la her Kylie Cosmetics lip kits, of course), but we’re willing to bet that the inky black color and long-wearing matte finish would be right up her alley.

NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment in Paint It Black, $26, available at NARS.
Shay Mitchell

If you're intrigued by true black and midnight blue lipsticks, but aren't quite ready to go all the way, try a deep berry hue à la Mitchell instead. Think of the vampy color as black lipstick on training wheels. (Plus, she told us that this is one of her favorite makeup looks — ever.)
This matte, deep aubergine lipstick is one of our favorites for fall. Sure, it isn't pitch black, but baby steps, right?

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Train Bleu, $27, available at NARS.
