Midi Skirt

"Whether it’s A-line or pencil-style, below-the-knee skirts from spring are here to stay. This ladylike silhouette is entirely appropriate for the office but also perfect for a night out on the town or a cozy dinner and drinks. To loosen up this conservative style, I’ll be pairing these skirts with a loose sweater and chunky accessories."

Pleated Midi Skirt, $68.96, available at ASOS. Midi Skirt with Buttons by Tibi, $242, available at Shopbop. Pleated Woven Skirt, $17.80, available at Forever21.

Brightly Colored Pants

"The bright color trend from spring is spilling over into fall; there’s no need to swap the brights for jewel tones just yet. Wearing brightly colored jeans, like this red pair, is a great way to keep your fall and winter wardrobe from looking a little too dark. I also have my eye on a bright pair of wide-legged trousers which are the dressed up alternative to these casual, red jeans."

Skinny Trousers, $59.90, available at Zara. 811 Ankle Skinny Jeans by J Brand, $176, available at Shopbop.

Military-inspired Outerwear

"Ever since army green has become more of a neutral rather than an accent color, I find myself becoming more and more obsessed with all things military-inspired. I bought this vest at Old Navy after seeing its twin at J. Crew for triple the price. I foresee myself wearing it under blazers, over dresses and even with my red pants. I’m also on the hunt for the perfect military-inspired pea coat that will successfully fend off the Chicago chill come January."

Pendleton Meets Opening Ceremony Boxy Military Parka, $517.17, available at ASOS. Commodore Coat, $138, originally $158, available at J. Crew. Women's Canvas Surplus Vest, $34.94, available at Old Navy.

Chelsea-style Boots

"A fall essentials list wouldn’t be complete without a pair of boots. I can’t get enough of the short, early ‘60s, Beatles-esque booties. They look great with so many different styles, from cutoff shorts on a warmer fall day to lightweight dresses with a blazer when the air develops a chill. Booties are an essential investment at the start of fall as they’ll carry your wardrobe all the way into late spring (or June as we call it here in Chicago)."

Durham Boot by Rag & Bone, $495, available at Rag & Bone. Petty Suede Booties by Sam Edelman, $160, available at Shopbop.

Versatile Silk Blouse

"A great silk blouse is an essential for any wardrobe. Whether you wear it solo during the warmer months of fall or layer a blazer on top of it once it gets a bit chillier, a versatile blouse is a key item when transitioning to fall. Brands like Equipment and J. Crew are reinstating the importance of a classic blouse, making it easy to find one within any budget. Both neutrals and bold colors/patterns are on my list and I’m convinced that if I start collecting them now, I’ll be wearing them for years to come."

River Island Silk Pocket Shirt, $46.55 (originally $68.94), available at ASOS. Boy shirt in stripe crepe de chine, $110, available at J. Crew.
