Groot Bread Is Disneyland's Latest Viral Food Find

Not satisfied by offering up magic, enchantment, and long lines, Disneyland's been inching into the viral food craze.
First, the theme park introduced golden churros to commemorate Pirates of the Caribbean's 50th anniversary. Then came red and blue churros to celebrate Star Wars Day. Between those releases, Disney chefs whipped up real-life gray stuff for a pop-up Beauty and the Beast restaurant. Each and every one became an Instagram sensation, getting as much attention as the media giant's films and the theme park's attractions. So naturally, when Disney California Adventure opened up Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout! over the weekend, there was on-theme food to go with it. So get ready for Groot bread to be the viral standout of the summer.

Grub Street reports that everyone's favorite giant tree got a sourdough makeover — and fans went crazy for Groot-shaped snacks that accompanied the ride's debut. The sourdough bread is modeled after Groot, complete with olive eyes and a head of jalapeño-cheddar hair for $8.50. The site also points out that waits for the ride on opening day topped out at five hours and the bread sold out within hours of its own unveiling.
Definitely a step up from the lobster, teddy bear, and even Mickey Mouse-shaped loaves that were previously available, the Groot bread is also more manageable in size. Instead of toting around a huge loaf, it's relatively snack-sized. Anyone looking for Groot outside of Mission Breakout! can snag a plain sourdough version at Fairfax Market in California Adventure's Hollywoodland and a jalapeño-cheese version at Cosmic Canteen.
In addition to baked Groots, the park is offering up a slew of new foods to celebrate the Summer of Heroes, which coincides with the new Guardians ride. Hungry guests can chow down on Gamora-inspired tacos, a quiver of funnel cake fries, superhero sweets like a Captain America donut, and Drax nachos, which are a plate of straightforward nachos inspired by the hero who doesn't get metaphors. Those snacks don't sell out quite as quickly as their Groot-inspired counterpart, but that may be because they're not as photogenic.
