The Best (& Worst) Orgy Scenes Of All Time

Orgy scenes are tough to nail. Show too little, and all you're left with are flailing limbs. Show too much, and well, it's just porn. And then there's the little things: How to soundtrack the orgy, for example. You don't want to veer into the '80s elevator muzak territory (because, once again, porn), but you also need viewers to focus on the task at hand.
This might seem like a fairly trivial issue — I mean, how many orgies are actually being shown on screen? Actually, a lot more than you would think. Now that threesomes are about as common as apple pie, TV and film have turned to the orgy as a way to shock, awe, and stimulate viewers. Some, like Westworld's infamous brothel orgy, are fancy. (The show apparently hired a sex choreographer to make sure everything looked as sexy as possible. The result was lots of nubile bodies going at it while painted various shades of gold.) Others, like say, Caligula, are more low rent. But good or bad, they're all worth watching.

The Worst: True Blood, Season 2 (2009)

True Blood fans may remember this absurd plot line from Season 2, which saw Sookie and Bill fighting off a mythological maenad whose presence in Bon Temps causes everyone to get really really horny.

The Best: Sense8, Season 1 (2015)

This scene from episode 6 of the first season of Sense8 — which tells the stories of strangers who are emotionally and mentally connected — proves that orgy scenes can do more than titillate. The moment, directed by Lilly and Lana Wachowski, showed a gay man, a transgender lesbian, and two straight men sharing an intimate moment that packed a punch for inclusivity.

The Best: Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

This one is just a classic. Stanley Kubrick's erotic drama — featuring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman at their peak — takes us on a sexual adventure as Dr. Bill Harford (Cruise) slips into a massive secret society masked orgy.

The Best: Westworld, Season 1 (2016)

Hey, it's not HBO unless there's a full-blown brothel orgy halfway into the season, right? The sexual escapades on display in episode 5 of the network's acclaimed new drama, called "Contrapasso," were reportedly orchestrated by a sex choreographer. And if you want more details on what that means, check out our Faking It column about how sex scenes really get made.

The Best: Perfume (2006)

Based on the 1985 novel by Patrick Suskind, the film stars Ben Whishaw as Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a man whose amazing olfactory abilities lead him to a life of murder in search of the perfect scent. Eventually, he's caught and sentenced to death. But on the day of his execution, Grenouille unveils his otherwordly perfume, which turns out to be so potent it provokes an orgy.

The Worst: Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)

Don't get me wrong. Bram Stoker's Dracula is an immensely entertaining movie. I mean, it stars '90s Winona as Mina Harker and Gary Oldman as a very seductive Dracula. Unfortunately, the orgy scene involves an extremely wooden Keanu Reeves (and not in a good way), as Jonathan Harker, getting it on with Dracula's wives. Not sexy.

The Best: Shortbus (2006)

New York City can be a lonely place. You usually don't know your neighbors — or if you do, it's in a "ugh the guy next door who plays music at 3am" kind of way — and aside from the guy who runs the bodega down the street, you can go for a few days without having a meaningful conversation with a human. This is where Shortbus comes in. The erotic dramedy focuses on a group of people seeking sexual connection in the city that never sleeps.

The Best: True Detective, Season 2 (2015)

A bright spot in an otherwise dull season. Rachel McAdams' Ani goes undercover and finds herself in the middle of a very fancy orgy. Perhaps the best part of this plot line is the orgy supercut reel it inspired.

The Worst: Caligula (1979)

When your film is co-produced by Penthouse International, you pretty much know what you're in for. A loose historical tale of Roman emperor Caligula's debaucherous reign directed by Gore Vidal, this cult classic is basically a two-hour-long orgy. I am not kidding — be ready for constant sneaky dick shots.

Producer Bob Guccione said he wanted to make "a picture so controversial, so innovative in its magnitude, that it would fundamentally change the habits of the theater-going public." He didn't quite succeed, but the film will forever be known as the one in which Malcolm McDowell pees on on the corpse of a woman he's just tortured. So there's that.

The Best: Seinfeld, Season 6 (1995)

Okaaay, so this isn't a real orgy scene. But come on, what is better than Jerry Seinfeld ranting about the stress of group sex?

"Don't you know what it means to become an orgy guy? It changes everything. I'd have to dress different. I'd have to act different. I'd have to grow a mustache and get all kinds of robes and lotions and I'd need a new bedspread and new curtains I'd have to get thick carpeting and weirdo lighting. I'd have to get new friends. I'd have to get orgy friends!"
