Before Unicorn Bath Bombs, This Was The Most Coveted Tub Item

The humble bar soap has flown under the radar for years. Some toss the shower companion to the side; while some still can't live without it. But one thing is for sure: it'll always be considered a staple — even as we fill our tubs with rainbow bath bombs, foaming body washes, and high-tech cleansing devices.

But did you know that before all those fancy shower buys, a bar of soap — specifically the iconic white Dove Beauty Bar — was considered a luxury? (If they had Instagram back then, you can bet it would have gotten all the likes.) And whether you realize it or not, it has shaped the way we suds up today.

So, in honor of its anniversary, we've rounded up four things you might not know about this cult-classic bar. There are hilarious vintage ads and unorthodox uses you've probably never heard of before. (Um, brows?) Click through, then lather up!

1. It cost a whopping $1 when it launched in 1957
That might sound cheap now, but considering most bar soaps sold for $10 cents at the time, it was a luxury. Think: paying $150 for a $15 lipstick today.

2. The ads were hilariously hyperbolic
This wasn't just a soap — it was an entire experience. This specific ad, featuring a woman on the phone with her S.O, reads: "I'm head over heels in DOVE!"

3. The cream was revolutionary
This vintage ad touts a fact that still remains true today: 25% of the Dove White Beauty Bar consists of a spreadable cream (read: a combo of glycerin and other humectants) that keeps skin hydrated.

Again, that might not sound like a big deal now, but compared to the soaps back then — which left skin with that dreaded stick and pH imbalance — it was a gamechanger. And it changed the way manufacturers made shower products going forward.

4. Today, people use them for... their brows?
While we wouldn't necessarily say it's the best brow pomade ever, countless beauty bloggers swear by the hack. Check it out in action here.
