This Is Proof That Sophia Bush's Hair Has Been Perfect For A Decade

When you think social media star, red-carpet fixture, or beauty-industry influencer, you probably don't think of Sophia Bush. Strobing, glitter lips, chrome nail art — those aren't her things. But while we've all been watching the Kardashians take over the hair and makeup world, Bush has been flying under the radar and rocking some perfect red lips, the shiniest waves we've ever seen, and some futuristic eyeliner we're trying out this weekend. It's what made watching her beauty evolution so fun.

In addition to her role on Chicago P.D. and impressive philanthropic work with I Am That Girl and Invisible Children, she’s now paired with Birchbox to bring the joy of badass beauty products to everyone for the holidays — and we’re pumped about it. The beauty company and Bush are teaming up for insane giveaways that feature the dreamiest products — Day 2 was the entire Oribe collection (which happens to be one of her favorite lines to use on set). When we found out she was a beauty girl, albeit a laid-back one, we couldn’t wait to chat about it. And what better way than having the actress walk us through her favorite beauty looks from the past decade?

Click ahead to see what Bush had to say about her evolution — and prepare to call your salon and book a glossing treatment immediately, because damn, that hair is good.

Back in 2006, Bush had the kind of hair we dream about — and by that we mean really, really ridiculously glossy. The style isn't her norm these days — she's lightened up and gone shorter — but it still feels timeless, she tells us.

Bush loves changing up her hair and says this look is "a good indicator of that." Forget eyebrow-grazing bangs; she went for cheekbone-skimming ones, and admitted the upkeep was a chore. "It's slightly humiliating how terribly bad I am at maintenance," she says. "I've never been good at style that takes immense work." We feel that.

Headbands aren't Bush's first accessory choice, but at the Maxim Hot 100 Party in 2007, she opted for a sleek updo featuring a thin, silver one. She was in a hurry, but needed something to pull the look together, and it did the trick. "I’d been running around with friends and I didn't have time to do my hair, so I threw it into this high ponytail," she explains.

Her flawless makeup, however, couldn't be mistaken for an afterthought. Bush tells us, "I mix up makeup depending on where I’m going and colors I’m wearing. Day-to-day, I don’t wear much, if any, at all. But it can be part of the work, it’s part of the fun."

Bush had just hopped off a flight before walking the carpet at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards and got right back on a plane after. And she still looked this radiant and rested. Life isn't fair.

She played up the purple, green, and gray tones in her makeup to match her dress, and added tousled waves to her red hair, which she dyed at the time for the movie The Narrows. "I was just having a good time with it. I love playing with hair color. If you can’t have a little bit of fun, I don’t know what you’re doing," she says. Amen.

Bush went from red to almost black, but she wasn't totally sold on the color. "[It] works, but it’s a little too harsh for my skin tone. I don’t mind it, but it’s not my favorite," she says.

However, we're feeling the moody, Betty Draper vibe of a vintage dress, black cat-eye, fire-red lips, and soft '50s curls.

In the last four years, the actress decided it was time to go back to her roots. Her colorist went for a more lived-in color — "a slightly better version of my natural color." By 2012, she hadn't touched her hair with dye in seven months, she tells us.

Surprisingly, this chocolate-chip-cookie hair is actually the exact same color as that in the previous photo. Bush tells us, "This was just a look I’d seen on a ton of runways that season and I loved — the slick part and voluminous hair. I thought it was so fun."

The bangs came back in 2012. After saying goodbye to One Tree Hill and her character, Brooke Davis, Bush was "so ready for change." (And had forgotten what a pain in the ass fringe can be.)

"The outfit was really conceptual, futuristic, with white leather," says Bush, who credits Tym Buacharern, her longtime makeup artist on OTH, with the awesome, architectural eye makeup. She describes it as Twiggy meets Mad Max — and she was so into it.

Her beauty look at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2015 was Old Hollywood glamour with a bit of California girl thrown in.

Bush rarely goes for an updo, and when she does, she keeps it simple. "At the end of the day, it’s about, 'What’s the dress, what’s the neckline?' The dress was so classic and since it was so long, to the floor, it felt good to put the hair up." And nothing pairs with emerald quite as gorgeously as fuchsia.

In 2015, Bush got a pretty bob — in part due to necessity. "We hit a point [on Chicago P.D.] where the bleach was drying and my hair suffered a bit with the weather in Chicago. My hair was fried from color and it was fun to chop it."

"I don't like to wear a ton of makeup," says Bush. "It doesn't feel realistic [to me]." So, it goes without saying that a 24/7 glam squad is not high on her priority list: "I understand that style has become an industry in and of itself, and I think there are people who are innately good at that and I have the utmost respect for them. But I’ve come to accept that's who I’m going to be forever. I’m not one of those people who has every look planned."

At the Cushnie et Ochs spring '16 show in NYC this past September, 10 years from where we started this retrospective, the actress matched her smoky, taupe eyes to her suede dress for a warm, chocolaty look. Her shiny, brown waves helped, too — we get why fans call her "Detective Hair Porn," that's for sure.
