The 5 Fall Nail-Color Trends You Need To Know Now

In-demand nail artists know what the biggest manicure trends for each season are going to be long before the rest of us. How? Well, they're the ones who create them. At Fashion Week, on the red carpet, and on editorial shoots, they pick out the colors for models and celebs.

That makes manicurists the people to talk to about what's cool — before it's actually cool. For help sorting through the countless nail-polish options for fall, we tapped Brittni Rae. She's on the roster at L.A.'s coolest (and only) all-nail agency — Nailing Hollywood — and is one of the top up-and-comers in the field. To wit: She’s Demi Lovato’s go-to nail artist and has worked with celebs like Miley Cyrus, the ladies of Haim, Rose Byrne, and many more.

Ahead, she's spilling the five trends that are going to be everywhere this season. Click through to shop them all.

Holographic & Chrome Nails
"Holographic nails are making a huge comeback," Rae says. "And everyone is really into chrome right now, too." The trends differ slightly — holographic polishes can feature fine glitter, while chrome ones tend to be more reflective and smooth — but we're considering them to be in the same family.

If you're taking the salon route, Rae suggests seeking out a nail shop with artists who use holographic foil (sealed with a gel- or topcoat) or chrome powders (she prefers Unicorn Powder, which many shops will stock and use — just call around). But, really, there are no rules: "It's fun — and any color will do, from deep green to burgundy to silver," Rae says.

You can also get on the DIY bandwagon: "A holographic glitter polish is a great way to get the look if you don’t want to get your nails done," Rae says, noting that KB Shimmer's formula, seen here, is her top pick and the one she uses on her clients. As far as chrome goes, tons of brands offer the high-shine silver color.

How To Wear It: “I think this looks best on shorter, natural, or oval nail shapes — if your nails are very long, it tends to look like...a lot,” Rae explains. “If you have a shorter nail, it gives off the perfect effect, but it doesn’t look overpowering or too flashy.”

KB Shimmer Flake Me Home Tonight, $9.25, available at KB Shimmer.

Rae's second pick for holographic nails comes from Color Club — it's another staple in her kit.

Mermaid Blue With Shimmer
"I love a deeper blue with shimmer this fall," Rae says, noting that she predicts a serious uptick in this fresh trend. She adds that there are no rules — any deep blue with shimmer will do. But unlike spring's shimmery navy trend, this one is a bit more whimsical. "It's almost like a mermaid blue," she adds. Her top pick for the look is this lacquer from Marc Jacobs Beauty. "It goes on really opaque with just a thin layer, so you don’t have to use a lot," she says.

How To Wear It: "I like the nails short and square with this one, which is very flattering," Rae says. "Blue can be very overpowering if you have longer nails."

Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored Hi-Shine Nail Polish in Blue Velvet, $18, available at Sephora.

Shades Of Berry
"Berry hues are going to be huge for fall," Rae says. Her go-to is OPI's Malaga Wine. She's easing her clients into the hue with lighter, brighter berry shades now, and plans to bring out the deep, moody hues later in the season.

How To Wear It: "It looks best on oval nails," Rae says.

Pale, Sheer Pink
Creamy, '70s-inspired beige ruled spring and summer — and it's certainly still on-trend for fall — but Rae sees something lighter and sheerer on the horizon, too. "It’s going towards a more pink-y, sheer neutral that is a little more natural-looking," she explains. In good news for nail novices, these are pretty foolproof to paint on, thanks to their lighter finish. "They're less opaque, so they're very low-maintenance," says Rae. "If one chips, you don't really have to worry about it." Plus, the sheer, pink color works on every skin tone.

Her top picks? Christian Louboutin's Tutulle and Madame Est Nue. "The bottles are crazy," Rae says with a laugh, "but the colors are great."

How To Wear It: Whatever shape you like works with this trend, according to Rae.

Christian Louboutin Nail Polish in Tutulle, $50, available at Neiman Marcus.

Deep Green With Shimmer
Rae predicts that deep, moody greens in reflective textures will be big for fall. Go with a classic forest green or an inky, almost black version. The one thing they have in common? Shimmer, which keeps the look fun.

How To Wear It: "I like to have a natural, oval nail shape," Rae says.
