The Actress Who Plays Barb On Stranger Things Is Just As Awesome As Barb

[Warning: Spoilers for Netflix's Stranger Things ahead.] Of the many great aspects of Stranger Things, Barb could well be the best. Barb is Nancy’s best friend who gets insanely murked by the faceless monster from the Upside Down while Nancy is hooking up with the hot boy from school. Barb also rules, like, super hard. Barb is all of us in high school; swinging her legs above the pool while people are making out in the house. She’s responsible, wears cool glasses, and seems like she has her head screwed on straight. She’s basically the opposite of who we would expect to be murdered by a monster. Fans have responded to her, even to the extent of painting a mural. Barb is played by Shannon Purser. And if you don’t recognize the name, don’t feel bad. It’s her first role. Purser is also basically all of us. For example, she freaked out when sitting near Winona Ryder. “There was a cast dinner at one point and I sat across the table from her and I was totally in shock, trying to play it cool, like this was something that happened every day,” Purser tells Vulture. “But on the inside, I'm like, ‘Wow, this woman: Edward Scissorhands, Little Women’ — I love her, for sure.” Purser also totally gets why everyone loves Barb. “Everybody has had that experience where your friend drags you to a party because the person they're crushing on is there, and you don't really want to be there but you go there with them anyway,” Purser tells Vulture. “Everybody has been a third wheel, and Barb is a wonderful, nerdy third wheel. People really relate to her and her outcast, left-out position because everybody's felt that way at some point.” Barb! She really is the best.
