Which Spring Trend Is Right For YOU?

Photo: Tristan Fewings/ Getty Images.
Sifting through this spring's many beauty trends is no easy task. The runways offer up inspiration ranging from the bold (Glitter! Blue eye makeup! Spider lashes!) all the way to the demure (glowing no-makeup makeup, pale-pink washes of color, brushed-up brows), plus everything in-between.

While we wouldn't be opposed to giving each and every one a go — we are beauty-obsessed, after all — there are better ways to decide which is right for you. You guessed it: We're consulting the stars. Whether you're a hardcore zodiac devotee, or just like reading your star forecast for fun, now is the perfect time to hit up the planets for advice on your look.

"Jupiter moves only once a year and will reveal where we might want to take a risk and try something different," Ophira Edut, one half of R29's resident experts the AstroTwins tells us. "It can really show where you may want to come out of your shell or comfort zone and do something a little bit different." To help you find the right look, the AstroTwins used the placement of Jupiter to assign each zodiac sign one of our favorite 12 spring trends. This will be especially beneficial to keep in mind around May 9, but will continue until the beginning of fall, Edut says.

Of course, we wouldn't leave you hanging on the actual execution. Celeb makeup artist Fiona Stiles took a break from clients like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Gabrielle Union, and Nikki Reed to give each sign guidance for pulling off these trends in real life, including the products and tips you'll need to seamlessly implement them.

Our prediction: You're going to love experimenting with your sign's new spring look.

The AstroTwins Say:
"Aries is going through a more fresh-faced phase, with Jupiter in their natural and earthy sixth house. Though Aries is known for being a little flashier, right now they should focus on being more grounded. Aries will do best with more subtle hues and tones until the end of summer."

The AstroTwins' Trend Pick: Monochromatic Pink Makeup

Mono makeup is having a huge moment right now on both the red carpet and spring runways like Thakoon (seen here), Dior, and Tanya Taylor, so it's no surprise the AstroTwins selected this trend for Aries.

The hallmark of this look is the use of only one hue on the lips, cheeks, and eyes, which can be applied in different intensities and shades. The result is polished, modern, and subtle.

Makeup Artist Fiona Stiles Says: "Using the same shade all over the face is a beautiful way to keep a look feeling light and fresh. Plus, it simplifies the makeup bag. A cream blush is the best way to create this look, as creams really feel like they’re a part of the skin.

"Minimalist looks on the runway sometimes need a little extra oomph in real life, so be sure to curl your lashes and don’t skip out on the mascara; that way, the look doesn’t feel washed out."

The AstroTwins Say: "Bold and dramatic looks with vivid colors suit Taurus, since Jupiter is in your expressive fifth house now. This is very different from what they usually wear. Taurus is an earth sign known for being a little more traditional, but this year they’re going through a flashy and colorful phase. It’s good for them to do something that is bright and stands out."

The AstroTwins' Trend Pick: Blue Eye Makeup

Blue eye makeup ruled the spring runways in numerous renditions: A hint of aqua at 3.1 Phillip Lim (seen here), a delicate powder-blue cat-eye at Jenny Packham, and dark, dense royal-blue shadow at Missoni. It also happens to be one of our favorite spring trends, since it's bold, but also approachable, depending on how you wear it.

Makeup Artist Fiona Stiles Says: “Electric- or cobalt-blue washes of color can look breathtaking on the runway, but can be hard to pull off in real life. Stick to graphic, blue liner or a metallic, navy shadow when playing with this hue. You want it to be bold, but not overwhelming.

"Don't overthink it — just use blue the way you'd use a black eyeliner: along the top lashline, in the waterline, or maybe a bit of a smudge under the lower lashes. Keep it pretty and a little 'downtown.'"

The AstroTwins Say: "Jupiter is in Gemini's feminine fourth house, which means playing up the girly or bombshell look is well-suited for you now. While Gemini is usually a little more playful, they’re going through a very feminine phase. Right now is the time that Gemini should really play it up!"

The AstroTwins' Trend Pick: Over-The-Top Lashes

Think of this trend as Twiggy made modern. Whether achieved with mascara or individual falsies, inky, spidery lashes feel very now, thanks in part to spring shows like Marni and Mansur Gavriel (seen here).

Makeup Artist Fiona Stiles Says: "Spider lashes are an easy transition from runway to real life. There’s a great modernized '60s feeling to clumpy lashes, because it defines the eye but also creates an instant edginess.

"Use a volumizing mascara and pinch the lashes together to make them clumpier and more defined. You want to be really deliberate with the look — otherwise, it’ll just look like you did a bad job with your mascara."

The AstroTwins Say: "Jupiter is in Cancer's dualistic third house, which means the more, the merrier! Everyone is sort of switching personalities this year, so while Cancer tends to be more reserved, they’re in their house of communication and expression. This means they’re in a phase where they can be more playful. Jupiter's third house is all about duality, so a look that has some variety is perfect for them."

The AstroTwins' Trend Pick: The Two-Toned Eye

There was no shortage of '70s-inspired beauty looks on spring's runways, including the colorfully shadowed eyes at Alexis Mabille and DVF. Fun fact: The makeup at the latter show, seen here on Kendall Jenner, was inspired by Diane von Furstenberg's go-to clubbing look in the era of Studio 54.
12 of 37
Makeup Artist Fiona Stiles Says: "This is such a great way to play with color, and can easily be worked into your day-to-day routine. This can be done with subtle shade differences, or you can do the look with two totally different color families. I prefer the more subtle, two-toned look in the same color family, because it makes people look twice — and want to get a closer look!

"Keep the lips on the lighter side, but be sure that you groom your brows and curl your lashes before adding mascara. The focus with the look are the eyes, so make sure they’re on point."

Try: NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Brousse or Jolie Poupée, $35, available at NARS.

The AstroTwins Say: "Jupiter is in Leo's strong and stable second house, so it's all about choosing one powerful feature right now. Leo tends to be a little flashier, but now they’re toning it down and looking for something a little more sophisticated. While Leo tends to play up every single feature all at once, it's too much of a good thing. This year is all about toning it down and picking a focus. They have a very strong, grounded energy right now, so a singular bold statement is good for them."

The AstroTwins' Trend Pick: Bold Brows

Full, feathered brows aren't going anywhere. To wit: J.W.Anderson and Christopher Kane (whose model is seen here) are just two of the designers who featured them prominently on the spring runways.
15 of 37
Makeup Artist Fiona Stiles Says: "Anyone can embrace a full-brow look — it instantly changes the face for the better, and makes you look more youthful.

"The trick is to keep the brow gently groomed and barely filled in, so use a brow product that will coat the hairs, not the skin. The point isn't to have a dense, opaque, painted-on brow — but to have a brow that is full with an airiness to it.

"A full, groomed brow looks great with any look, from a no-makeup makeup look to a full face with lips and eyes and the lot. This full brow keeps any look from feeling severe."

The AstroTwins Say: "Jupiter is in Virgo's fiery first house, so it's all about coming out wearing bold, bright colors — especially red — right now. It's time for Virgo to have an assertive, in-your-face look. Virgo is an earth sign so they normally go for a more natural appearance, so this is out of character for some. However, they should feel much more comfortable in bolder looks like this now, thanks to Jupiter."

The AstroTwins' Trend Pick: Cherry-Red Lips

The evidence is mounting that the lip du jour is a bright, vibrant cherry red, a major change from the deep wines and orange-red hues we've seen in seasons past. The proof: The bright and cheery shade was seen at Topshop Unique (here), Marchesa, Dolce & Gabbana, Oscar de la Renta, and Victoria Beckham.
18 of 37
Makeup Artist Fiona Stiles Says: "Red lips never go out of style; they will always be equal parts chic and cool. A cherry-red lip has a certain edginess to it — it's all about being noticed. I say with a red lip, go big or go home.

"Use a lipstick with great payoff and pigment. Matte shades will have better longevity, which is something you want, which will keep that lip color on your lips, not everything [and] everyone around you.

"A red lip can be worn alone or with a bit more makeup. My favorite way to see a red lip is with a beautifully, softly sculpted brow, a little gentle contour, and great lashes. A bold lip makes you carry yourself differently, so be prepared."

The AstroTwins Say: "Jupiter is in Libra's enchanting, ethereal, and dreamy 12th house, which lends a softness to you now. It is the house of subtlety, mystery, and illusion. A sheer and transparent beauty look is good for Libra now, as this 12th house is all about shadows and light, but it's also a house of glamour. Anything that has a play on lighting is good. Libra already likes to feel glamorous and feminine, so they should feel very comfortable with this look."

The AstroTwins' Trend Pick: No-Makeup Makeup

The hallmark of no-makeup makeup is sheer and transparent shades that give definition and polish. As you may well know, this everyday look is far from a trend, per se, as it rarely goes out of fashion. The latest update, seen at Rodarte (here), Roberto Cavalli, Versace, and Alberta Ferretti, however, has a touch of contour and an extra dose of radiance on the cheeks for a whimsical glow.
21 of 37
Makeup Artist Fiona Stiles Says: "This is an easy look to interpret: Just focus on keeping it minimalist and creating gentle angles and depth.

"It may not look like a lot of makeup, but you want to make sure you don’t just seem washed out. By using a contour and/or a bronzer, you’ll create depth, dimension, and warmth, giving a beautiful, subtle complexity to the look.

"Add contour, bronzer, and a bit of highlighter to create the perfect no-makeup makeup look. The three products work together to make the skin luscious and sculpted without looking overdone. If the skin seems too flat, pat on a touch of moisturizer to bring the life back."

The AstroTwins Say: "Jupiter is in Scorpio's 11th house, which is a house of rebellion and youth! It's the teenage house of the zodiac. Scorpio already has an edge, and they're known to wear a smoky eye... The trend they should wear is a departure from their usual sultry style."

The AstroTwins' Trend Pick: The Punk-Rock Eye

We saw a few different ways to wear one of spring's most badass trends (what we've dubbed "I don't give a fuck" beauty), but the smudged, slept-in, and all-around messy eye seen here at Marc Jacobs is one of the more dramatic. Models at Zero + Maria Cornejo wore simple smudges of white liner in the outer portions of their eyelids, while the ladies at Anteprima sported smears of faded blue on the inside thirds of their lids. Very punk-rock, indeed.
24 of 37
Makeup Artist Fiona Stiles Says: "Punk rock is an attitude, so you need to be able to carry off the look with full confidence. I love the idea of smaller graphic shapes versus a big, dark, panda eye. Both have a rebellious attitude, but the graphic statement is more modern and cool.

"This look needs to be thought out from tip to tail. Consider your wardrobe as well as the rest of the makeup. I think a structured outfit from a Japanese designer would complement this look so well. It’s not really about jeans and a white tee.

"The rest of the makeup should have a bit of a 'bugger off' feeling to it, so not much makeup elsewhere or it will look like you care too much."

The AstroTwins Say: "Jupiter is in Sagittarius' structured 10th house, which brings the need for strong lines and definition. This is out of character, as Sagittarius tends to be a little more wild and playful. Right now, it's all about polished sophistication — structure and linear design. But don't be mistaken: Jupiter calls for definition, but not flashy colors."

The AstroTwins' Trend Pick: Graphic Eyeliner

Some of fashion's biggest houses sent graphic black liner down spring's runways. At Céline, models wore a cat-eye made more complex with a floating line of black above the crease, while Fendi showed a thick, arched line plotted between the crease and brow. Anna Sui (shown here, represented by Gigi Hadid) offered the most wearable option: a tightline accented with a black cat-eye shape that joins the outer flick.
27 of 37
Makeup Artist Fiona Stiles Says: "Here’s the thing about a graphic line: You have to do it and mean it! The trick is to find a way to make a bold graphic statement on your eyes that is still flattering, like a strong, bold line in the crease of the eye, which is modern and exciting. Be sure to have a great, non-transferable liner that really stays put!

"The most effective way to wear a bold, graphic eye is to keep the rest of the face minimal and strong. Pair it with no mascara or tons of clumpy mascara; lip balm or a bold, matte red mouth. It’s about contrast and bold lines, so design the rest of the face accordingly.

"You definitely don’t want to pair it with...girly makeup colors. That would truly defeat the purpose."

The AstroTwins Say: "Jupiter is in Capricorn's adventurous and playful ninth house, which says, 'more, more, more!' Capricorns are usually the reserved and structured ones, but they are going through a wild and adventurous stage, so this trend suits them well right now. It’s like you're at a non-stop party: Your life is Brazilian Carnival or Cirque du Soleil!"

The AstroTwins' Trend Pick: Glitter!

Glitter is the only trend that gets an exclamation point, because, well, it's glitter! Creatures of the Wind (seen here on the model) showed a dramatic cat-eye coated in the shiny stuff, while Giambattista Valli, Dries van Noten, and Delpozo sent models down the runway with smaller, but still impactful, versions along the lashline and lid.
30 of 37
Makeup Artist Fiona Stiles Says: "It’s challenging to take glitter from the runway to real life — glitter has a way of being unruly. Taking your cue from the runways is great, but finding a way to make the glitter behave is clutch.

"I like a liquid glitter liner painted along the top lashline for that hint of light-catching sparkle — and the binders in the formula keep the glitter firmly in place!

"The nice thing about a glitter liner is that you can do your makeup as you normally would, and the sparkle in the liner just gives the look that extra dash of specialness."

The AstroTwins Say: "Jupiter is in Aquarius' dark and mysterious eighth house, which calls for a sexy and sultry attitude. This is not usual for Aquarians, since they tend not to wear much makeup. Now is the dark phase to try this trend."

The AstroTwins' Trend Pick: Ombré Lips

Wine lips were everywhere on the runways this spring — Burberry Prorsum, Cushnie et Ochs, Antonio Marras — but the ones at Miu Miu were by far the most interesting. Why? They had a touch of ombré — a faded look that mimics what happens to the lips naturally after eating something that stains them.
33 of 37
Makeup Artist Fiona Stiles Says: "This is a little tricky to pull off in real life unless you tone it down a touch. Ombré where it’s a lighter color in the center is more flattering and wearable than the reverse.

"Use a dark red with a lighter, more velvety red on the inside, or try an electric pink with an orange-y shade in the center. This will look subtly cool without it looking like your lipstick is just wearing off.

"You’re going to need to take care of this look, because it requires a bit of maintenance. Choose a longer wearing lipstick to cut down on touch-ups."

The AstroTwins Say: "Jupiter is in your interpersonal and romantic seventh house, which emphasizes dialogue and kissing. What Pisces is saying is what they want people to focus on now, so putting all the focus on your mouth is good. It's also a very good time for pink, so the mouth should be light and pretty — romantic, even."

The AstroTwins' Trend Pick: Retro, Pink Lips

Michael Costello sent models down the runway with a painted-on nod to the '50s and '60s: opaque, baby-pink lips. Although they're not wine, red, or even gold, they're just as dramatic.
36 of 37
Makeup Artist Fiona Stiles Says: "A wash of flat, opaque bright color on the lips makes an amazing statement, whether it's Pepto-Bismol pink, neon geranium, or any other hue. You need to wear a color like this with confidence, in spades. You better rock that look like you mean it, because there's really no in-between.

"Flat, bright, pale lip color can be a little tough to pull off, so use a slightly darker, richer shade, which will help make it more wearable, like this one from OCC. A bit of mascara, shadow, and liner will make the look feel complete. This isn’t a 'soap-and-water' look; you’ll want to make the effort to have a finished eye and brow."
